About Laef Kucheran

I'm Laef, the 20-year-old creator of, a free, non-partisan website that helps inform Canadians of their options each election. With your support, I can keep running the project, and expand it to serve every province and territory.

VoteMate... What's that?

Keeping up with politics is a full-time job. And it's not for everyone! But when it comes 'round to election time, voting should be for everyone, and to vote, it helps to have an idea what's going on. Problem is, if you haven't been putting in a full-time job's worth of time to keep track of the news, election day is kind of too late to start.

That's where VoteMate comes in. It's a single, free, non-partisan website that puts every political candidate, every party, and every political issue in one place. Each candidate has a profile, and each party's platform is included on the site, so you can compare both the candidates and the parties side-by-side quickly and easily.

I created VoteMate when I was 15, and I've been running it ever since! It's helped thousands of people vote in four (going on five!) elections, and I hope it can help thousands millions more.

What elections do you do?

So far, I've done the 2017 and 2020 BC elections, the 2018 BC municipal elections, and the 2019 and 2021 Canadian federal elections. But I'd like to expand! I want VoteMate to be there for every provincial and territorial election (and maybe some of the larger municipal elections as well), so that I can help more people learn about who they're voting for.

How can I help?

Ugh, here's the part where I ask you for money. Okay, so...

VoteMate takes a lot of time to run. In the weeks leading up to an election, it's a full-time job (actually, usually more than a full-time job), and it's work I'm not paid for. I also have to fund a lot of the project myself: Hosting, domains, translation, and artwork all cost money, and I want to pay the people I work with a living wage.

For the last few years, I've been funding VoteMate on my own, and volunteering my own time to the project, because I think it's important. I really think knowledge is the most powerful thing in a democracy, and I think VoteMate helps people who don't have the time to keep up with the news still be as knowledgeable as they want to be. I've seen people use it VoteMate inform their vote and teachers use VoteMate to teach their students about democracy. And it's been amazing to be a part of.

But long-term, this is unsustainable. For this year's federal election, I'm doing a French version of the site for the first time, and I want to do it right. That means hiring professional translators and paying professional fees. And if I want to expand VoteMate to more provinces, VoteMate really would be come a year-round job.

I can't do this alone. I'd love your help.

Please, chip in a little bit! I know it's a lot to ask, given you'll probably only lean on the site once ever two years on average. But, as the folks at any good charity would say, your recurring donation can help us me keep the project strong and healthy year-round for years to come. Something something viewers like you. Thank you!

See, I'm bad at asking for money.

Do you have a further vision?

I do. There's a reason why this is, not, after all!

I want to help make more things that inform people and help them participate in democracy. I've experimented with videos about political news in the past, and I'd like to keep working on that.

I'd also like to work on making in-depth, easy-to-understand, thoroughly-researched videos, articles, and podcasts about important political, democratic, and societal issues, and what stakeholders, activists, politicians, and experts have to say about them. My thinking is that those videos, articles, and podcasts could then supplement the content on VoteMate and help voters make their decision come election time. (I've been tentatively calling the project WrongWayRound, but I'd love to hear your thoughts!)

And finally, I want to make articles, videos, and podcasts about how we can change things. We live in a world that feels like it's constantly falling to pieces (and where the people inside it justifiably feel like doing the same), and it seems so impossible to make a difference. But it is possible. I'd like make #content about, well... how.

Of course, everything I make, you as a wonderful, brilliant, beautiful Patron will get a first look at. You'll be my guinea pigs for new ideas and experiments, and your advice, ideas, and criticism will be even more useful than your funding!

So... What are you waiting for?

Patronize me, you amazing person you! Let's make something amazing together.
