Hi,
my name is Laura Scott and I am a budding artist. I am not really sure what to write so you get to know me and my goals, but here goes I started creating things many years ago. At that time I was working mostly with wood, and tole painting. I actually started woodworking because the wooden plaques we were using for tole painting were very expensive, so I purchased a scroll saw and some wood and learned how to create the plaques myself. I continued to advance my skills and started building rustic furniture. I have continued to work with wood, but I like variety and using different mediums.
I love to go to craft or art shows and see what people are creating to gather new ideas. If I see something unique I have to go home and find out how it was made and try to do it myself. Once I figure it out I will put my own twist on it . My poor husband just cringes when I get excited about something because he knows that he has lost me into the garage until I perfect the skill. I say that jokingly because he is very supportive and one of my best critics.
Last year I started working with dried gourds, and I fell in love with how versatile they are and what I can create with them. I have made
ot Air Balloon
Bowls
Bird Houses
Tea Lights
Christmas Decorations
Vases
Thunder Drum
Drum
Wind chimes
. I always though is was strange when someone would say that they look at something and know what it will become. I now know what this means. I will look at a gourd and depending on its shape and texture, I can actually start to visualize what it needs to become.
I also work with textiles and cement to create planters and sculptures. The sculptures are made with apoxi sculpt clay, fabric, wire and tape. The planters and garden lights are made with fabric soaked in concrete and than draped to dry. They are then painted and sealed to ensure they are protected from the outside elements so they last for years.
Sculptures
Planters
I have started to sell my creations at local craft shows, and I have gotten very good reviews and responses. The issue with taking products to these shows is the damage that can happen with transporting products to and from the shows. It would be great to have my items in one location so this does not happen. This brings me to my long term vision which is to create an environments where myself and other artists can have a stable place to sell our creations.
I would like to open an artists market that .would sell products that are hand made and unique. The market/hub would be a place for artists to meet and have a place available for them to work on their creations, and teach classes to community members. This will takes time and money to build the proper environment for this to happen. I am hoping I can find a farm with a storefront so there would be land to grow grow my gourds, and space to expand.. Artists will pay a monthly fee to assist with payment of a sales associate at the store to sell their products.
This brings me to the ultimate stage of my dream. Once this market starts to become known and shows potential for success, I would then like to start offering art activities to individuals with autism or other disabilities. A place where they could come and work with tactile materials to help them express themselves through art. This would be a service offered so these individuals in the community. It wold be a place where they could belong and participate with others in the community. I am hoping to be able to offer this service free of charge to these individuals.
What they money would do for me and others
My initial goal is $6,000/month. That money plus sales will hopefully be enough to keep me going, It would pay for the space needed for the art hub and the costs associated with running the hub such as heat and hydro.
Web site - .I need to enhance my presence on the internet. To do this I need help from a company or person who knows what needs to be done to get me seen. I wont even try to pretend that I know how to do this, so I will need to hire someone who has these skills.
Personally - .I need financial help so I can keep eating while I pursue my dream. It may be trendy to be a starving artist, but I need to continue to eat, and have a roof over my head.
I hope I have given you enough information to understand the direction that |I would like to go. I would appreciate any financial help that you can offer.
