Hiya. I'm Lawrence M. Schoen. I'm setting up this page to garner support for my work as a science fiction author.

Like many authors, I've worn a lot of hats. Some of you may also know me as a small press publisher, a college professor, a cognitive psychologist, a hypnotist specializing in the issues faced by creative artists, and a klingonist. All those other jobs are part of the gestalt that is me and have informed who I am as a writer. While there's no shortage of SF authors with doctorates or a background in academia, the number whose specialties focus on language and memory is pretty small. Throw in hypnosis and Klingon and it's just me.

Your patronage will allow me to focus on my writing, and the best way I can thank you for that support is to invite you behind the scenes and share the various facets that go into my life as an author. That will include not just fiction that I've written but also stories written by friends and colleagues whom I respect and admire, whose work has influenced and touched my own.

It will also include essays from some of the other domains that have shaped who I am, discussions of how and why memory works (and doesn't work), how self-hypnosis can be used to remove obstacles from writers' lives, and a myriad amazing things about language.

A handful of you will receive individual autographed author copies of my books as soon as I receive them my publisher, one-one hypnosis sessions (via Skype), even the opportunity to be Tuckerized as an anthropomorphic sapient character in the third Barsk novel, all depending on the level of your support.

At a minimum though, you'll learn some Klingon and you'll get photos of my awesome dog, Gej.

In 2007, I was a finalist for the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. I've been nominated once for the Hugo Award and five times for Nebula Award. In 2016 I won the Cóyotl Award for my novel Barsk: The Elephants' Graveyard. My fiction ranges from light, humorous tales of a stage hypnotist entrancing aliens on interstellar cruise ships to more literary explorations of how we think about death, race, and free will via a metaphor of anthropomorphic animals.

At the end of the day though, I think every author is writing about the human condition, whether we do it with ordinary people, extraterrestrials, or talking elephants.

Since I'm asking for your support it's only fair for you to ask how I intend to use the money.

My immediate goal is to defray some of the healthcare costs my wife and I currently incur, to the tune of $3,000 each month. Yeah, seriously, three grand every month. And yes, the irony that I spent most of the last 17 years working in healthcare is not lost on me. Worse still, this insane amount is likely only going to get larger.

So that's why I'm here setting up this Patreon page. I believe it will give me some stability and maybe even a little breathing room. My sixtieth birthday is coming up in the summer of 2019 and I think I have more than a few good years left ahead of me. I'd like to spend them writing books and stories that will both entertain and inspire. I'm hoping you can help.

And regardless of whether you opt to become a patron or not, thanks for reading this far. Here's a link to some free copies of stories from the Amazing Conroy universe. I hope you like them.

Any support is welcome. Thank you.
  • For helping to keep kibble in his bowl, Gej will show his appreciation by sending you a monthly photo of his furry self. Yeah, I'm a dog person.
  • And, just for being a supporter, you'll be eligible to submit a suggestion for the "Klingon phrase of the month." That's right, each month I'll take suggestions from my supporters of some phrase or sentence to render in Klingon the following month. I'll pick one each month. If I choose yours, you'll be credited in the post.

This Patreon page is primarily about my writing, so if you support at this level, basically the price of a mocha latte:
  • I'll send you a previously published short story of mine for free (in your choice of either epub or mobi file formats).
  • I'll also be talking with some of my author friends and attempt to convince them to pony up a free story too. Why? Well, I believe in win-win scenarios and because you're supporting me I want to turn you on to fiction of some other people that I think are pretty damn good, and for them, maybe they'll pick up a new reader that might otherwise never have discovered them.
  • And you'll also get the image of Gej, and the chance to suggest a Klingon phrase.

Want to see how the sausage is made? At least once per month:
  • You'll get to digitally view a never-before-seen original draft chapter or short story I'm currently writing or a deleted scene from a published novel of mine.
  • And you'll also get the free fiction, the image of Gej, and the chance to suggest a Klingon phrase.

At this level of support you get to witness some of the other hats I wear:
  • Every month I'll send you an essay/chapter of nonfiction. It might be from the book I'm doing on Self-Hypnosis for Writers. It might be some thoughts I have on the human condition that are forming the theme of a novel. Or a discussion of some aspects of cognitive psychology, particularly memory. Or some background tricks in linguistics that speak to world building in fiction and alien languages in general.
  • And you'll also get the draft chapter/story or deleted scene, the free fiction, the image of Gej, and the chance to suggest a Klingon phrase.

In addition to all of the previous patron level rewards, you'll automatically receive a signed author copy of any print-published work of mine that comes out while you're a patron. Author copies are almost always going to be US English first editions. I'm putting a cap on this tier because 1) I get a limited number of author copies and depending on where you are the postage to get it to you can be expensive and 2) people who become patrons early will get this, as opposed to folks who wait to join until the month before I've got a new book due to come out.

In addition to all the previous patron level rewards, I'll call you via Skype for a one-on-one hypnosis session. After getting a general idea of your availability, I'll offer you up to four possible date/time slots, month to month, for at least one-hour. Alternatively, if you're not interested in hypnosis, we can spend our Skype hour talking about other topics, such as Klingon, linguistics, psychology in general, expanding on some of what's been covered in that month's essay, or just hang out and chat.

In addition to all the previous patron level rewards, I will Tuckerize you in an upcoming novel or shorter work set in the Barsk Universe. Depending on the work, I'll give you some option as to what species/race you'd like to be -- not limited to just the two species of uplifted elephants, but also some of the dozens of other anthropomorphic races (according to the appendix, there are 87 different ones). In fact, we've only seen a small number of the different species, so you could conceivably walk away with bragging rights as the first named character of that species portrayed in my fiction. I'll also include you in the acknowledgments of that book, because seriously, it wouldn't have been possible without your support.

In addition to all the previous patron level rewards, I will base a major character in a novel on you. I'll ask for your input on some decisive action that character will take in service of the plot, and you (well, your character) will be instrumental, either by ensuring the hero wins the day or by dying (heroically or horribly, depending on whether your one of the good guys or the bad guys). You could end up being a "volunteer in a hypnosis demonstration that goes horribly wrong and Conroy has to save you, or someone who befriends Pizlo in the third Barsk novel, or a cardplayer that tries to cheap LeftJohn Mocker, or… I don't know what, but we'll figure it out because you're being so insanely generous in your support of my fiction.
