About Leah McElrath

THANK YOU to my amazing followers and patrons!

I analyze and write about the intersections of U.S. and international politics, media, human rights, human behavior, and psychology. My writing has been published by Newsweek, Huffington Post, Salon, and Shareblue Media. My tweets and Twitter threads have been published by numerous mainstream news media outlets within their own articles.

As a co-founder and Managing Partner of Renna Communications, a small public interest communication firm, my efforts helped shape the national narrative on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues from 2006-2013. In that role, I wrote material for attribution to others that was published in ever major journalistic outlet, including the New York Times and the Washington Post. Working with the LGBTQ television news magazine In the Life, I was an associate producer for a 2003 episode called "Violent Opposition." My professional background also includes two decades of work as a psychotherapist specializing in trauma.

As an activist, I have been involved in social change movements related to international human rights, women's rights, LGBTQ rights, anti-racism advocacy, and anti-war efforts literally since childhood, when I attended protests with my parents and contributed to an underground newspaper they started called Mockingbird published in the early 1970's in Houston, Texas. In the early 1990's, I was a co-chair of what was then the National Capital Area chapter of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

I earned a Bachelor's degree magna cum laude with a focus on Economics and International Relations from Smith College, including one year of study at the London School for Economics and Political Science. I was awarded a Master of Social Work degree from Smith College School for Social Work.
