Hello and welcome!

I'm Kym, a creator, teacher, writer and translator, originally from Melbourne in Australia, but now based in Villingen-Schwenningen in Germany.

A love of words and helping people learn

My life is firmly centered around curiosity - learning, languages, teaching and creating.

My love of words saw me eat through my school and local libraries and regularly clean out the book sellers at flea markets. Although the first languages I learned were all programming languages, I've since picked up Japanese and German, and am planning more. I'm fascinated with the nuance behind language and how certain concepts are simply untranslatable.

I fell into teaching at 14, with piano and music theory! Later, I lectured in computer science at university, and then I became a technical writer, still helping people learn though! Finally I returned to actual teaching - English - in Japan and Germany.

It's not just words!

Ever since I discovered the internet, I've created with words. ASCII art tutorials, webpages, resources for my uni students and tutors, content for technical writers, and now blog posts to help language learners, teachers, writers and translators over at  learnedwords.com.

Many creative pursuits
My creation-addiction isn't limited to words - with photography and far too many creative hobbies: piano, patchwork, cross-stitch, crochet ... And as if that weren't enough, I plan to learn sketch and paint watercolors, knit, play cello, and start self-sufficient gardening.

I game regularly to calm my overactive curious mind, and am a tea addict, coffee snob, chocoholic, cookie monster, and crazy cat lady with two adorable and very fluffy cats.

A difficult journey
Chronic ill health meant I had to stop teaching and writing full time, and dial back my hobbies in 2007. After five operations, I moved to Japan in 2010 to teach English in Fukushima with the JET Programme, but the huge quake and subsequent stress made the psoriatic arthritis flare badly.

After moving to Germany, I ended up spending months in hospital in 2015, first to deal with the endometriosis and adenomyosis (again), then to get the arthritis under control. A couple of years later I was diagnosed with breast cancer (two unrelated tumors!) I'm still recovering from the massive operation, but so far (touch wood), my follow-up tests have been clear.

Why Patreon?

I receive a lot of requests from language teachers for resources helping them to prepare for and teach their classes, and from students requesting feedback on their written work, and asking for help to learn languages, instruments, crafts or simply to find out how they best learn..

If you like my work, and want to get access to resources to help you teach, learn, write or translate, sneak a peek at my creative habits, ask me questions and get feedback on your writing or translations, or simply want to support me, I would love for you to become my patron!

Every bit of support helps!
With the support I receive, I can put more time into creating resources to help you. I won’t have to take on as many energy-draining side-gigs and it will give me more time to pursue my goals. Your financial support will also help me pay off 6 years of student debt - 11K to go, down from 50K!

By pledging a monthly amount, you are not only supporting me, but you also receive a range of neat rewards (depending on which tier you choose).

Please note that I will occasionally update my rewards based on what I feel will suit my patrons. I don’t plan to do it often, and I will always give plenty of notice!

My goals for 2019
  • Finish the draft of my ESL projects book
  • Publish a semester's worth of cheat sheets and conversation prompts here on Patreon
  • Design a course for conversation class teachers who have never taught before
  • Buy a cello and start learning to play it (my dream since I was a kid!)
  • Learn to paint watercolors and knit

Thank you for reading and for your support!
