Hello! I'm Ben Mosior. I teach Wardley Mapping, a visual method to explore, understand, and communicate strategy. I also run LearnWardleyMapping.com.

No time to read the book?

The traditional way to learn Wardley Mapping is to read the free book by Simon Wardley. Clocking in at 9.5 hours of reading (and probably three times that if you study the material closely), it's a challenging but worthwhile endeavor.

However, if there's one thing I've heard time and time again from our growing community, it's "I want to learn, but I haven't had time to read the book."

If that sounds like you, please consider signing up for this Patreon. I'm creating short video summaries for the chapters in Simon's book so you can get the basic ideas in bite-sized pieces.

The first chapter summary is here

To sum things up, I want you to be able to get the basic ideas of Wardley Mapping quickly, see if it's for you, and dive in if it significantly improves the effectiveness of your work. Here's chapter 1 (of 19):

A new summary every month

Summary videos will be published as member-only posts on Patreon and then added later to LearnWardleyMapping.com. There are currently 19 chapters in Simon's book, each of which you can read for free on Medium, below:
  1. On Being Lost (28m read) (5m video)
  2. Finding a Path (24m read) (7m video)
  3. Exploring the Map (23m read)
  4. Doctrine (33m read)
  5. The Play and a Decision to Act (35m read)
  6. Getting Started Yourself (20m read)
  7. Finding a New Purpose (39m read)
  8. Keeping the Wolves at Bay (26m read)
  9. Charting the Future (33m read)
  10. I Wasn't Expecting That! (41m read)
  11. A Smorgasbord of the Slightly Useful (72m read)
  12. The Scenario (14m read)
  13. Something Wicked This Way Comes (19m read)
  14. To Thine Own Self Be True (12m read)
  15. On the Practice of Scenario Planning (34m read)
  16. Super Looper (38m read)
  17. To Infinity and Beyond (24m read)
  18. Better for Less (37m read)
  19. On Playing Chess (27m read)

Why learn Wardley Mapping?

Let's explore this proposal with a map, so you can experience Wardley Mapping for yourself.

Every map describes a chain of needs. In this map, the Patreon Member (you) wants to learn how to Gain Strategic Advantage, which depends on Learning Wardley Mapping, which in turn depends on the Wardley Mapping Book.

The location of Learning Wardley Mapping along the X axis is documentation of my belief about how evolved it is. By placing it in Stage II (Custom), I'm suggesting it currently has the following characteristics:
  • a forming market
  • a potential for competitive advantage
  • moderate but unsurprising failure

I'd much prefer they be:
  • a growing market (as opposed to a just-forming one)
  • actively providing advantage through implementation (as opposed to a potential to do so)
  • a low failure rate (as opposed to moderate failure), with constant improvement

To make that happen, I'll need a way to shift Learning Wardley Mapping into Stage III (Product). So what is my strategy to do so?

A map facilitates a common understanding of the situation, so proposed changes and resulting effects can be clear. In this case, my intended action (in red) is to introduce another component into the chain of needs — video summaries based on the book. I believe adding these summaries will help cause Learning Wardley Mapping to shift to the right.

Could my map and strategy be wrong? Yes, certainly. And now we can have a conversation to improve it together, so when we both take action (you by becoming a patron, me by doing work to meet your needs) our common understanding of the situation means we are better-aligned and more effective.

This example barely scratches the surface of what we can do with mapping. There's so much to learn yet about applying doctrine, using evolution, and setting up more advantageous strategic plays. The book has it all, and I want to make sure you learn all about it!

Frequently Asked Questions

How often are you publishing new summaries?
Once ever month. Twice a month if we reach 200 patrons.

How early is "early access?"
Since I'll be integrating your feedback, I expect to publish finished videos outside Patreon after a few months.

How much does it actually cost to make these videos?
Between 10 and 20 hours of my time. It's a surprising amount of work, but it's so worthwhile to making mapping more accessible to more people.

What happens after you run out of chapters?
The project ends, though we may discover and experiment with some new ideas along the way for ongoing content.
