Important Security Notice from Patreon

Yesterday I learned that there was unauthorized access to a Patreon database containing user information. Our engineering team has since blocked this access and taken immediate measures to prevent future breaches. I am so sorry to our creators and their patrons for this breach of trust. The Patreon team and I are working especially hard right now to ensure the safety of the community.

There was unauthorized access to registered names, email addresses, posts, and some shipping addresses. Additionally, some billing addresses that were added prior to 2014 were also accessed. We do not store full credit card numbers on our servers and no credit card numbers were compromised. Although accessed, all passwords, social security numbers and tax form information remain safely encrypted with a 2048-bit RSA key.  No specific action is required of our users, but as a precaution I recommend that all users update their passwords on Patreon.

Here are some technical details of the incident:

  • The unauthorized access was confirmed to have taken place on September 28th via a debug version of our website that was visible to the public. Once we identified this, we shut down the server and moved all of our non-production servers behind our firewall.

  • There was no unauthorized access of our production servers. The development server included a snapshot of our production database, which included encrypted data.

  • The development server did not have any private keys that would allow login access to any other server. We verified our authorization logs on our production servers to ensure that there was not any unauthorized access.

  • As a precaution, we have rotated our private keys and API keys that would allow access to third-party services that we use.

  • We protect our users’ passwords with a hashing scheme called ‘bcrypt’ and randomly salt each individual password. Bcrypt is non-reversible, so passwords cannot be “decrypted.” We do not store plaintext passwords anywhere.

As soon as we discovered this issue, our engineering team immediately prevented further access and is now conducting a rigorous investigation of our security systems. We are also engaging a 3rd party security firm to do a comprehensive internal security audit and will be implementing new tools and practices to ensure industry-leading security for our users and their data.

I take our creators’ and patrons’ privacy very seriously. It is our team’s mission to help creators get paid for the immeasurable value they provide to all of us, and earning your trust to provide that service in a safe and secure way is Patreon’s highest priority. Again, I sincerely apologize for this breach, and the team and I are making every effort to prevent something like this from happening in the future.

A Conversation with Edward Snowden (Part 1)

In this week’s episode, Neil deGrasse Tyson chats with whistleblower Edward Snowden via robotic telepresence from Moscow. The two card-carrying members of the geek community discuss Isaac Newton, the difference between education and learning, and even how knowledge is created. They also dive into the Periodic Table and chemistry, before moving on to the more expected subjects of data compression, encryption and privacy. You’ll learn about the relationship between private contractors, the CIA, and the NSA, for whom Edward began working at only 16 years old. Edward explains why metadata tells the government much more about individuals than they claim, and why there’s a distinction between the voluntary disclosure of information and the involuntary subversion of individual intent. Part 1 ends with a conversation about Ben Franklin, the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the CIA’s oath of service, and government Standard Form 312, which is the agreement Snowden violated.

Surprise Raku day! Fresh sculpture

What should I name it???

The other day I was at the studio and someone was doing raku and had some extra room. So I quickly glazed this piece right out of the first kiln and got it fired up same day =) I've been saving up to do a whole bunch at once, but this was a perfect opportunity.

I did a time lapse video of making the ball on top. It really reminded me of making tissue paper pinatas in grade school. Still working on that video editing, and the piece is already done! Which is awesome because I hope to have it the gallery grand opening.

Have I gushed about this gallery yet? it's so awesome, I am so honored to have a piece displayed among the great artist's in there. I just want to work super hard and make the best work possible

Flight of the Song A Day Navigator

Thanks so much for your feedback on last week's post. Josh Woodward put it this way:

"Nobody has it all. The best you can do is to use your strengths to muscle your way around the weaknesses."

That's something that it's hard to remember. The other aspect of that equation is that you have to find people to collaborate with who have the strengths that you lack. Finding collaborators like that can be hard. There's a lot of obstacles. For one thing, everyone has their own stuff going on. I'm happy to spend a certain amount of time giving my expertise to friends and colleagues, but ultimately their thing is THEIR thing and my thing is MY thing. Casual collaboration only goes so far. I think all parties have to have skin in the game in order for collaboration to really take off.

I'm trying to get better at this, and find folks to work with who have the time and interest in throwing their lots in with me on a variety of projects. One of those projects is a Song A Day Navigator. The first step on my end was putting together the spreadsheet of every single song (which I had) with every single YouTube link (which I hadn't done before, duh). This gives us a very basic song a day data set that he can work with. Future data points in that spreadsheet would be: lyrics, links to buy, # of views, etc. But the next step for me is to figure out some interesting ways to NAVIGATE that data. I've come up with three so far. One of them is the image above: The Pick A Number system. I'm also attaching images for how I image a "Timehopper" version would look and one that's based on words.

My question to you: Are any of these three ways of looking at Song A Day particularly interesting to you? Can you think of other ways that would be more interesting to interact with this massive catalog of songs?

The person I'm working with is working on his own project that I don't TOTALLY understand, but it has to do with APIs. I think he's trying to make a thing that makes it super easy for anyone to make an API to go with a data set. The idea being, in the case of Song A Day, that he's going to create this API for interacting with all 2400+++ songs that other people can just take and run with. So if you had an idea of how you'd like to organize my catalog, and you just wanted to do it, you could.

I'm really excited about it.

Song Challenge: Key Changes

"Nothing Was Your Fault" from Cosmos started with a simple drum beat (which it still opens with, in exactly the same form it had when I first put it down). As I started to play with adding chords though I gave myself the challenge of trying to come up with more unusual progressions. This led to a lot of modulation and eventually the decision that it should never rest in one key for more than three chords in a row. There was a lot of back and forth between coming up with the melodies and coming up with the chords that would go beneath them, which is not the way I normally work (usually it's one and then the other) but I'm quite pleased with the results. Hope you enjoy this, and if you want to play along, I put a ton of extra editing into getting all the chord names and piano fingerings on screen!

Thanks for supporting - you bring a lot of joy to working as an artist. xo

Matt Good Really cool, highlights what a well written song this is. Do you have a specific way of going through keys like that? I've found perfect cadencing into it works well for me, but this just seems seamless and gives the track a modal feel at times (like the Ab chord in the chorus)

September 24, 2015 11:18:55 · Reply

Andrew Huang This was a mainly lot of experimentation and playing around. I did intentionally try to avoid many standard cadences as I wanted a more unpredictable feeling. A lot of extended chords were brought in to introduce the flavor of a new key, eg. in the chorus I could have gone from a Bbmaj7 to a C, but by making it a maj7 as well it takes it out of the key of F and it leaves you floating in this nebulous space for a bit - are we in C now? Or is it the IV of G? And then the Ab yanks us away to something new again...

So, having some technical difficulties with patreon and picture rotation, I'll fix it when it gets straightened out hehe

I collected some various sea plants washed up on the beach yesterday and collaged them into this vase, along with some more sand. Still in progress, I think I'm going to keep these two in white with some color in the plants on this one, maybe, but taking a break for my birthday tomorrow.

More stinky seaweed shapes coming up next week =)

sara fosdick BTW i had an old chic band mate come from out of town yesterday and i was playing your solo work through my media room--no video--just the music. We talked a few minutes till she finally said--"Sara, Dude--Who is this incredible voice ?! Give me that thumb drive to drive back to austin with--i'll buy her album when i get home." She knew nothing of you or pomplamoose or patreon--so of course i educated her of your solo career. another BTW -- i heard you mention ART GARFUNKEL'S 'break away' album. I grew up on his harmonies thanks to my omniscient dad. Art has about 9 solo albums if you don't know---the best is 'watermark' --the entire album is full of songs written by JIMMY WEBB. But i am partial to 'breakaway' songs---'i only have eyes for you' and 'disney girls'. Dad is happy with full memory back now btw. If you don't know who Jimmy Webb is then you should do something about that !
