Who am I?
The video below is several years old, but it might be fun to see an author opening up a box of the 2nd edition of a children's book project! (Lucky, the Left Pawed Puppy).  I hope I can post a video in a few months opening a box that holds the novel that your support at Patreon has helped me produce!

As you can see, I'm not a young author, but I'm trying to get out all the projects I can at this stage of life. In my "previous life" I was a teacher of the deaf, a sign language interpreter, and a professional English tutor for college students through the federally funded Trio Student Support Services Program.

Why am I here on Patreon?

I love quotes and one of my favorites has been from despair.com: "Maybe the sole purpose of my life is to be a warning to others." That quote is hilarious to me because it applies to many of the projects in my life should have come with a warning to other creators: ”Don't try to create without help, without funding, all by yourself in a vacuum.” When I heard about Patreon, it seemed to me the perfect way to engage people who truly want to see your work flourish. I'm hoping that Patreon will make my favorite quote obsolete. Instead, I'd like to make "the sole purpose of my existence to have written something useful, helpful, perhaps inspiring, to a much wider number of people than I can reach now.

You might wonder why anyone who lives in Newport Beach, California needs help with funding. The fact is that while we do STAY in Newport Beach for a large portion of the year, we live in a 460 sq. ft. RV. We've put ourselves here because our adult children are in California and because we've learned that if you give up permanence, your garden, and four solid walls with other luxuries like a bathtub and a dishwasher, and if you don't mind living in housing that shakes in the wind, you can afford to be near the edge of America, look out to the ocean, and watch sailboats in a harbor nearby.

What will I do will the support Patreon members provide?
I have several immediate needs. I plan to have my novel, set in the 60s during the Vietnam War, published independently by late fall of 2019. The book is a mainstream, up-market fiction work that focuses on the main characters wrenching moral decisions at a time of social, political, and even religious revolution. I have 95,000 words written now through participation for a couple of years in NaNoWriMo, National Novel Writing Month. Of course, the novel needs a great deal of rewriting and then Beta readers. Finally, it’s going to need a professionally done cover. I plan to use the money from Patreon to hire an illustrator who will design the cover of the book in a way that will encourage people to read it.
I also have created an app called “The Perfect Husband App” which essentially is a list of “what to say to your wife today” with accompanying paragraphs as to why the phrases and words within the app are so important for healthy relationships. The app has had over 8000 downloads within the past two years, but unless I can run ads promoting the app, that number produces no financial gains and is simply a labor of love (pardon the pun). I’d like to use some of the money from Patreon to run ads on Facebook and other social media websites to promote this app to increase downloads. I have numerous other projects that I will mention in upcoming posts. Stay tuned.

What is all this talk of exclusive content for Patreon subscribers?

While I have a number of essays and short stories on the web and video narration of my children’s books, I have other writings that have not been published and I would like to share that with Patreon readers not only for your reading pleasure but also for your input.

However, the most exclusive and special offering I have is a box of letters that I’ve acquired that comprise a love story between Kate, a young woman with views opposing the war in Vietnam and a young man who enlisted. They had known each other only four months before his enlistment and the letters that began created a love story that you can live vicariously. This year is the 50th Anniversary of that love story.

When you become a subscriber, your email will be entered in a list of subscribers to the “Love Letters from Vietnam” series. The letters begin on May 16, 1969. You will be notified when the next letter “arrives in your mailbox,” thus being able to identify with the emotions of waiting back home.

Are those the only benefits?

I’m not sure if being left-handed makes me inclined to be a bit eclectic in my interests, but I have other projects that I will make available in more tiers. One of my favorites is “The Wisdom of Scooter”, a dog blog written several years ago from the life and times of our adorable Shih Tzu. I’ll keep you posted on all the other ideas I have in mind.
Thank you again for your time, your interest, and your kindness in wanting to support various artists whose work you enjoy and want others to enjoy as well.
