About Leon Cato

Hi, I'm Leon Cato, a photographer and visual artist. I returned to art "later" in life after working as a professional marketer for 14 years. It took years of working for different companies over two continents, earning an MBA and traveling through Europe and the Caribbean for me to return to my true calling. In 2010 I became a full time artist and entrepreneur.

My core values of autonomy, compassion, human connection and creative expression draw me to the projects that I pursue. I tell the stories of people who face overwhelming challenges to realize their individual freedom. My company, UnderCat Productions, is the primary vehicle to connect with subjects and display this work. Since 2009 I have created visual projects addressing themes related to identity, classism, homophobia, sexism and racism. Also, as a street anthropologist, I create visual studies of people existing in urban spaces. My work has been featured in numerous publications including Creative Boom, Feature Shoot and the Huffington Post.

Current Project
I am working on multimedia projects that address class, access to resources, facilities and public spaces in NYC. Specifically, I am focusing on homelessness in New York and the realities of poverty within broader Western society.

Ongoing Projects
NYC during Covid-19. The Coronavirus pandemic decimated my neighborhood of Elmhurst/Jackson Heights. My documentation of the pandemic's effects on Queens and NYC is ongoing as residents try to regain normalcy amidst a city on the verge of catastrophic health and financial crises.

Why become a Patron?

As a member of my inner circle here on Patreon, you receive my deepest gratitude. Support for my work is never taken for granted so I truly appreciate your generosity. There are a number of different tiers at different price points.

Rewards include early access to newly completed work as well as sources of inspiration and the chance to view new works in progress. At the highest tier you receive a special edition custom signed print.

While I post work on Facebook and Instagram, this is a small sample of what I complete. For a while I have been searching for a way to really connect and share with my community. Patreon is the place that really provides this opportunity. Plus, importantly, Patreon allows artists to receive financial support for our work which enables us to spend more time creating and connecting and less time worrying. This is not the case with most social media platforms.

Your support at any level is more than appreciated. The different tiers are less about rewards and more about what you're comfortable with contributing. If you are unable to pledge any amount, I understand. Feel free to check in from time to time as I'll occasionally post free work.

Thank you
