About Let Clothes Be Clothes

In 2020 we have plans to open a unisex childrenswear shop, publish our first book and continue our work to create an online resource via our website.

To do this we need your help. Join us on our journey to get more people talking about, and challenging, harmful gender stereotypes.

About us

Founded in 2014, Let Clothes Be Clothes is a grassroots campaign set up to challenge gender stereotypes in the design and marketing of children's clothes.

Run by writer Francesca Mallen, the campaign is focused on raising awareness, promoting equality and supporting businesses who are getting things right. We use social media to get a feel for parents concerns, and use our platform to take those concerns straight to retailers.

The campaign aims to:
  • Call out sexism aimed at children
  • Promote choice
  • Provide guidance (schools, retailers)
  • Raise awareness on why stereotypes are harmful
  • Encourage equality in early years

Our website (recently added to the British Library Archive of important British sites) offers resources on the impact of gender stereotypes, guidance for retailers and schools, while also supporting small businesses who are choosing to do things differently.

Please help support the continuation of our work by becoming a Let Clothes Be Clothes Patron!
