About Lettie Shumate

Hey! I'm Lettie Shumate. I am a Black woman, historian, antiracism educator, and racial justice advocate living near Wilmington, North Carolina. I am the owner and host of the podcast "Sincerely, Lettie" where I discuss history that has been whitewashed and break it down to connect the past to today. Let me also add that 'bibliophile' should be my middle name. I am so passionate about telling the truth about history and making connections. I don't hold back when it comes to hard topics and tough conversations, either!

I have a BA in History (2011) from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, a MA in History (2015), and a MA in Conflict Management & Resolution (2020), both from UNCW as well. With my MA in History I focused on American history and specialized in Black history and race studies. Y'all, that was hands down one of the most rigorous, challenging, and best decisions I ever made. I became the historian I am today. After working in corporate America while also teaching history at a community college (ya girl was busy!), I knew I was meant for so much more. I refused to settle. I took a leap of faith, followed my calling, and I decided to get my second MA in Conflict Management because knowing how to have tough conversations is critical.

The year I started my MA in History, Trayvon Martin was killed and a fire was lit in me that has only intensified. Little did I know that I was on my own journey to becoming me. So many components of who I am have bloomed so intensely. The way I explain history and how it moves others is a gift that I'm so glad I have, and this is also what steered me in the direction of antiracism work. It just all clicked, and I thank God for that. I want to show the bigger picture and how everything connects so that more people can see why it all matters. You want to know something else? I didn't like history growing up. It wasn't until college that I fell in love with it, and is also why I have such a passion for showing people history is far from boring!

If you want to learn history and its truths and get down-to-earth explanations, learn what it means to be antiracist and dismantle racism, obtain skills to have the tough conversations, and empowerment to speak up for Black people and people of color, you are in the right place!!

James Baldwin is my favorite Black intellectual, ever, and he once said, "American history is longer, larger, more various, more beautiful, and more terrible than anything anyone has ever said about it." He's right and that's why I do what I do so I can tell more about it and change some hearts and minds along the way.
