About Lexi Parra

Hey y'all, my name is Lexi! I am a documentary photographer, creative freelance and co-founder of Project MiRA currently based in Caracas, Venezuela.

A Little About Me ...
I'm originally from the Twin Cities and went to Bard College in upstate NY, where I received a double degree in Human Rights and Photography (May 2018). After graduating college, I was honored to receive the Davis Peace Prize to teach youth photography workshops in my family's home country, Venezuela. The grant was only meant to last the summer, but with crowdfunding, savings and freelance work I've been able to grow the short-term project into a long-term initiative (@miravzla), employing a team of 5 and teaching over 50 kids each month in some of Caracas' most vulnerable neighborhoods.

Since moving to Caracas in June 2018, I've dived deep into a long-term personal documentary photographic project that - through many weaves and turns - takes on the current socio-economic crisis by showing ordinary, the daily life; from the locura of Caracas as a city, the contrast between socio-economic classes, the underground cultures of hip hop and drag, to the struggles of farmers tending the land. In traveling around and speaking with people, in observing deeply, I'm working to create images and share stories that reflect the Venezuela I know: complicated, multi-faceted, wounded, resilient, joyful...

As an artist, I've always looked to intertwine social justice, education and photography because (firstly) passing on knowledge helps us lay the foundation for the next generation and (secondly) photography, for me, has always been about connecting and telling stories, more than taking a pretty picture.

So, why Patreon?

Honestly, I was a bit unsure about Patreon - mostly because we live in a world of image saturation so why me, right? But then I thought, regardless if I reach 5 or 500 patrons, connecting with others based on the work, sharing some of my process and experiences being a photographer and teacher down here in Venezuela...it all could lead to some good, and help with my living expenses while I focus on the art and the communities I serve.

By running a small, operative NGO, doing shoots for my documentary work AND juggling freelance gigs to help pay the bills...my work-week exceeds the regular 40 hours, by far! So, while my patrons will get exclusive access to awesome parts of my process, life and work that isn't available on FacebookInstagram or my personal website - your consistent support will also be to putting MORE time into what I love and what y'all want to see.

So, let's try this out and see where it takes us, together!
Thank you for the support.

En Solidaridad,
Lexi
Goals
51% complete
Once I reach my goal of $100/month thanks to my patrons, I will post a THANK YOU video exclusive to y'all because - while $100 doesn't seem like a lot to some - considering where I live, it could mean such financial relief that I could dedicate 80% of my time to solely personal and community work.
