Libreria Ghana

is creating innovative literacy programmes and events

In December 2017, we started out as a small library with modest ambitions in a suburb of Accra, the capital of Ghana but, since our launch, we've evolved into a full-scale movement for the promotion of literacy and literature, and the exploration of ideas.

This is how it happened:

In February 2018, I launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise $20,000 USD to rent and kit out an additional space for a dedicated children’s library (see fundraising video above featuring some of our cutest patrons-:))

Fortunately, I was only able to raise 10% of what I needed, meaning I had to abandon that plan and come up with a Plan B. I say fortunately because, in hindsight, I’m glad I didn’t achieve this goal. 'Failure’ forced me to reassess my approach and my purpose. It pushed me to get creative with how I could best work with children and young people to improve literacy and propelled me out of my suburban comfort zone into the big, wide world.

Fast forward six months, and we've developed a range of innovative literacy programmes and events that move us out of the confines of the library and right into the heart of underserved communities across the country. Our programmes stimulate the imaginations of children and young people and open their minds to new ideas, new concepts, and new ways of thinking.

Our outreach work is based on three programme pillars:

  • Market Akenkan (Market Reading)
A reading outreach programme for the children of market women where we go out into markets across Accra and run reading, storytelling, and writing sessions for children aged 4-15.
  • Little Libreria
Community-based libraries provided to schools in disadvantaged areas. We don’t just build libraries though; we build relationships. Each Little Libreria comes with a support programme developed in collaboration with the school.
  • Read Well, Look Smart!
A literacy programme providing free and reduced-price hairstyling and barbering for children aged 4-15 in exchange for reading. This programme was inspired by LINE4LINE in Baton Rouge, USA.

In addition, we have two ongoing projects:

  • #BookDropGhana
An online campaign targeting Ghanaians in the diaspora to bring and donate a book in Ghana.
  • Booksellers of Ghana
A project to digitally map informal and independent booksellers across Ghana.

We do all this voluntarily, but this is not sustainable.

Your contribution will help support me to continue to deliver existing programmes and projects and to develop, pilot, and implement a range of innovative new programmes and events for underserved communities and groups across Ghana.

I want to create scalable, sustainable projects and programmes that make a significant and measurable difference to individuals and communities, drastically improving their life chances, now and in the future.

These programmes will be both unique and adaptable, suited to the communities in which they take place, but able to be replicated in other places with similar literacy problems.

Our programmes will be monitored closely for their impact and documented diligently. As a Patron, you can follow our journey by gaining access to exclusive content, behind-the-scenes insights, and on-the-job learning.

Our work has only just begun.

Join us as we stimulate a love of literacy and a passion for ideas in new and creative ways!

Thank you!
