What is LiisBeth?

LiisBeth is a 100% womxn-led and owned, indie, intersectional feminist media enterprise that aims to elevate feminist discourse, plus connect and convene feminist changemakers who are tackling inequality and the fast failing status quo. Our community is comprised of creative, bold, feminist entrepreneurs, policy makers, activists, scholars, innovators and artists who think beyond binaries, beyond colonization, beyond linear, beyond short-term outcomes, and beyond incremental reform. Our readers embrace complexity, dream of a radically different, just, human-centered world that is in harmony with the natural world. Collectively, we are interested in working to build the bridges we need to get there.

Safe, Inclusive Space
We are committed to this space being trans and queer inclusive, anti-racist, intersectional, brave, and safe. Our feminism lives at intersection of visionary and eco-feminism and is informed by radical feminist theory. We welcome all allies.

What We Do?

  • Publish a reader supported open access digital magazine and subscriber-only monthly newsletter. Our stories aim to inspire, inform, elevate feminist discourse, plus mobilize and connect those frustrated with the current approach to and pace of change
  • Speak truth to power–responsibly
  • Produce thought-provoking online meetups and offline events
  • Co-produce the Entrepreneurial Feminist Forum (EFFS)
  • Help distribute change making innovative took-kits, current research, useful frameworks and feminist practice guides
  • Show up and advocate for gender and social justice on behalf of our readers at every opportunity
  • Create income and development opportunities for feminist editors, journalists and writers
  • Model feminist values and organizational practices in everything we do

What We Are Working On?

A subscription based Feminist Enterprise Collective portal for changemakers looking to connect, share practices, and collaborate.  The portal is called LiFE: Feminist Enterprise Collective.

Examples of Feminist Enterprises?

Entrepreneurial feminists work collaboratively to end gender-based oppression and strive to advance social justice through their entrepreneurial actions. Examples of entrepreneurial feminist organizations in action include Emergent Strategy Institute, Stocksy, Moxie Trades, PowerbitchesGather, Feminist Art Collective, Feminuty, Lunapads, The White Ribbon Campaign (started by three men), DriveHer, Alinker, KellyDiels Marketing, Ellevate Network, Allied Media, SheEO, Fresh Collective, Feminists at Work, Don’t You Want Me, Eve-Medical, XXcelerate Fund, HerVolution, Women on the Move, not to mention the many feminist media/press, environmental, health and wellness, art/design, culture-making and bookstore organizations in our respective communities.

How Are We Different?

We are the world’s only dedicated media voice and advocacy organization for the entrepreneurial feminists. We are a top-tier certified B-Corp.

Our Business Model

We are an incorporated for profit social enterprise, which means we are free to advocate politically (Charities and nonprofits are not allowed to be political in Canada).  As a B Corporation, we must invest the majority of our proceeds towards our social mission. People, planet and economic fairness are also incorporated into our bylaws.

Our Theory of Change

Storytelling, community, agency, and independent media, and like-minded organizations working together can change the world.

Why the Name LiisBeth?

LiisBeth was inspired by Stieg Larsson's fictional character, Lisbeth Salander, in the global best-selling Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy. Lisbeth is a fictional character, but a complex status-quo-challenging total entrepreneurial badass, and ergo an inspiring feminist action hero for many real-world women. Salander fought male and female "oppressors" but also worked to fight the patriarchy, violence against women, racism, classism, fascism and corruption. We also loved the company culture, activism, and journalistic ethos created by the story's Millennium magazine.

Toronto Based, Globally Minded

LiisBeth is based in Toronto (population 5.5 million) but we operate with a global perspective. Toronto is one of the world’s top startup cities and heralded as one of the most multicultural cities in the world. In essence, it is a global entrepreneur’s trading post, providing us with a wellspring of insights and connections to source and publish stories from around the world.

Interested in Creating an Inclusive World?

Systemic change is a collective effort. Entrepreneurs and allied business leaders can be an incredible force for change. We’re looking for feminists in business and supportive organizations to enlist, contribute, and help fuel profound change.
