I'm a writer living in the Appalachian mountains of Western North Carolina. I love salamanders, weeds, crows, and beekeeping. I hike, forage, read widely (I love fairy tales and native legends), identify wildflowers, and tend the mountain, and all of it goes into my writing, which I have been publishing on my blogmy Facebook page, and through Amazon.

And while I have the most astonishing, remarkably peachy group of friends and supporters, I don't have a lot of reach yet. I have one book of poetry out, and a second book of poems to be published in 2020. I want this work — these poems, these firefly sparks in murky times — to reach more people.

So, I'm about to enter the submissions grinder-upper. For the next year and a half, I plan to build a body of unpublished work and submit it for publication in magazines, in journals, and on websites. I'm aiming for 100 rejections in 2020, which should also bring me a few startling and happy acceptances.

Doing submissions means I can't publish any of the content on my site or social platforms because most publications will not accept work that's already been published online somewhere. (Yeah, even personal blogs or socials.)

Which is why I'm about to bring my creative work to Patreon...

I'm looking for a creative, fabulous tribe of people just like you to SECRETLY share my work with...

Patreon is a way to gather a group of friends, fans, supporters, and other crazy believers in love, art, and poetry to share and enjoy my work without being public. As a supporter, you'll see pages from my writing journals, you'll get the inside scoop on my writing process, and you'll be the very first readers of draft versions of new poetry and other creative writing. Oh, and you'll get news of my rejections and acceptances.

I am hoping for wild cheering, regular comments and pats on the back, and some "aw, poor baby" (maybe ice cream? wine slushies?) as I start piling up the new writing and the submission results. All on my way to a bigger audience, more hearts engaged and inspired by one ordinary Appalachian woman's writing and craft.

I need your help to balance out a wonky freelance income

Writing income is terribly unpredictable. Sometimes I get a dollop of income (yum, it's like whipped cream!), sometimes a whopping dollop (because it's fun to say "whopping dollop"), but I also go through plenty of more challenging, no-whipped-cream-at-all times, too.

My husband's income mostly keeps us going, but it revolves around the school year, and is also freelance, also unpredictable. My income helps cover the summer months, and pays for the things outside of our ordinary monthly bills. House and car repairs, new bee equipment, needs our boys have, that sort of thing.

So in addition to helping me gather a tribe, Patreon is also a way to smooth out some of those financial bumps and dry spells, so that I can keep writing.

How this deal works:

If you like my work, and you want to help me, just choose how much you want to pledge per month (even $3 makes a difference!). And don’t worry! You can edit or cancel your pledge any time you want.

The crazy and awesome bit

Most Patreon pages give you more stuff for offering more financial support. I would rather have EVERYBODY as a part of the tribe, regardless of what you can afford to give. 'Cause I love you. And whether you're Little Orphan Annie or Daddy Warbucks, I need you ALL so that I can do this thing.

So no matter what you choose to give, you'll still get:

  • First Reader's Club membership. You'll see all my new poetry and writing. No one else. Just you. It'll be our secret.
  • My behind-the-scenes process of writing.
  • First notice of publications, with links (if applicable) so you can go see and leave comments about how you've known me all along!
  • Astonishing and marvelous cat pictures, since Beezus believes all this is about her.
  • All kinds of (well, four, anyway) (so far) batcrackers group rewards as we meet specific goals together. Don't forget to check those out in the sidebar above! Do. Not. Forget. (Hint: A cat named Edgar Allan Poetry is involved.)

♥ I very much appreciate any support of my art you’re willing to give! ♥
Tiers
Fringed Phacelia
$3 or more per month

Every spring I wait breathlessly for this gorgeous wildflower to erupt in great swaths and blankets in the woods. It's one of the most special treats of the year! And now I will think of you this way, too. You are special, greatly anticipated, and well-adored. But I might accidentally call you "Cecelia" instead of "Phacelia." These things happen. I still love you.

Salamander
$5 or more per month

Salamanders are my favorite, and having lots of them is a sign of the health of the land. Or in this case, the health of an Appalachian poetry-writing woman. I hope to have dozens and dozens of salamanders of every color and variety here. A many-salamandered day is a splendid kind of day!

Crow
$7 or more per month

Having been gregariously adopted into "The Family" — as the community of crows on my mountain calls themselves — I have a deep, abiding fondness for crows. They warn me about coyotes, chortle uproariously at the cats, and let me know what's what on the mountain. I can count on these smart, beautiful loudmouths. I know they have my back.

Honey Bee
$10 or more per month

What a pleasure it is to be a friend to bees. The fragrance of the honeycomb, the lovely bright colors of the hives up the mountain, and the pleasurable hummm every warm day... Not to mention the golden gift of honey each year. When you support me at this level, you'll be as firmly in my heart as these amazing, intelligent, and hard-working creatures. I'll even sing to you (although maybe not out loud). The bees like it when you sing to them.

Hiking Cat
$15 or more per month

Beezus insisted I name a giving tier after her. In fact, she suggested I name my next book of poetry (which she says would be about her, naturally) "Beezus the Magnificent," but I'm holding her off for now. This gift category is a reminder that just like Bee (and her sister Pippi), you'll be with me emotionally and spiritually on all my rambles on the mountain. And if Bee and Pip try to catch you a lively little something, I'll make sure to rescue it.

Bluebell
$20 or more per month

We don't have so very many Appalachian bluebells on the mountain, so they are doubly prized. I re-route trails in order to give a patch of bluebells the space it needs to bloom, and hike out to watch their progress as often as I can. I leave offerings for their vitality and beauty at the offering pools, and send them plenty of blue, pink, and purple energy. I'mma do it in your honor, you fragrant, lovely thing, you.

Snowfall
$35 or more per month

You may think I'm a summer-lover, and I am. But winter is my most productive season, and our household chops wood (and does house repairs) year-round to be ready for a big winter. I often count the approach of winter by the size of our woodpiles. I dearly love a soft, silent snowfall on the mountain. I love it even more because I have a warm fire in the wood stove, a notebook, pen, and cup of mulled wine. Really, you are a singular person, and I deeply appreciate you!

Appalachian Unicorn
$50 or more per month

Wait. Do those exist? I might fall over. I definitely need to sit down and take in the fact that you're willing to support my work this way. Are those sparkles in your hair? I definitely spy a rainbow sheen. You take my breath away, and I'm so grateful to have you in this little tribe. (Can I bring you a cupcake?)

Goals
22 of 30 patrons
I'm a massive introvert. I'm awful, really. A true mountain hermit.

But if we reach 30 supporters, I will host a "Wine, Walk, and Poetry" event. You'll be invited, even if you're not an NC local. (If you can't come, we'll take pictures and you can enjoy it virtually.) It will be awesome, and I may even make cheese straws. Cheese straws! Whoa!
