About Lise Silva Gomes

Hi!  This Patreon encompasses my personal work, Craft & Practice, teaching how to develop a grounded, community-based art practice and my fiber arts side project Wovenutopia.

Craft & Practice explores issues of boundaries, finding inspiration, nurturing creativity, supporting your practice, and identifying and avoiding cultural appropriation as an artist or maker.

Patreon is where I’ll share behind-the-scenes details, additional photos/stories/interviews segments, ideas for the future, facilitate your questions with the Wovenutopia artists featured, and ask your feedback in shaping the site. I'll share inspiration and information here that won't be on the regular site as well as, include written pieces relating to my creativity & ethics practice Craft & Practice. This is the space where you can actively engage and help create the project behind the curtain with me. Your contribution will keep this project rolling, and as an investor, I will do my best to provide the content for Wovenutopia that you are most interested in seeing and discuss the Craft & Practice topics you are most interested in discussing.

Wovenutopia celebrates fiber as a mirror to past, present, and future, reflecting how we live(d) and the dreams we have through clothing, fiber sculpture, objects, & wallhangings. The Wovenutopia website is a space is to connect generations of fiber artists and admirers through inspiration, studio visits, interviews, resources and platforms for dialogue, paying homage to the historically overlooked women behind the medium and the power of fiber arts to reflect and inspire social change. Based in the Bay Area, an epicenter for counter-cultural fiber arts in the 60s and 70s, Wovenutopia pays special homage to local Bay Area histories and influences in the fiber medium.

For Wovenutopia, an immense amount of work and funding is required to host and moderate the site, photograph and edit the studio visits, purchasing and reviewing the books and materials that are featured. Your contribution is essential to help me defray costs and continue to grow the project. My future vision you are helping to fund: traveling to conduct studio visits with elders outside of the Bay Area, more frequent educational posts on Craft & Practice topics, and funding the WOVENUTOPIA SHOW we are hoping to open in Oakland this year!  It is up to us to create a platform for the fiber medium and the many femmes throughout history, around the globe, who have created works of beauty in the medium with little to no credit or compensation for their innovations. Many of the innovators who ushered in the revolutionary revival of fiber in the 1960s and 1970s are elders and the time to celebrate and learn from them is now. For so long, the visionary artists who have created innovative works in fiber, have been marginalized within the art world as "just a craft" and in large part due to being a female-dominated medium associated with domestic wares and hobbies. With renewed interest in fiber art in recent years, imitation, hobby tutorials, and design repetition has also flooded the internet, making it more important than ever to have a space to celebrate the innovators. Through historical research, studio visits, interviews, community forum space, events, and educational resources, Wovenutopia is a space to celebrate the femme spirits of past and present who reimagine our world in fiber.
