About
I'm a journalist and book author. My first book, LEAVING MUNDANIA, examines the complex world of larp in the US and Nordic countries. My second book is PANDORA'S DNA, and tells the story of the so-called breast cancer genes through the lens of my family. It's due out in Fall 2014.
In my spare time, I design, organize, and play short larps. I also blog about larp at LizzieStark.com.

Hello there, interactive theater people, improv stars, artists, and larpers.
Did you know that vacuuming is a great way to test a costume? That in Denmark there is a school that teaches exclusively through roleplay? Or that you can care for the well-being of your scene partners with a quick debrief afterward?
These are just a few of the cool things I've learned in the three years since I started blogging about larp. I plan on learning and explaining many more, hopefully with your help.
Larp is a medium of expression, much like theater, TV, or novels. In a larp, participants physically embody a character and meet up with other characters to play through a scenario that a facilitator or larpwright has created. A larp can be a Hobbit adventure in Middle earth, a murder mystery dinner party, a PG Wodehouse farce, or a journey into your own psyche. Come learn about the wide world of larp over at my blog, LeavingMundania.com
HOW PATREON WORKS
My blog always has been and will continue to be free.
By pledging here on Patreon, you become a patron of my blog, and by extension, of me and my writing career. Think of it as an elaborate larp, and you as the Medici to my Machiavelli, the Pope to my Michelangelo, the lawful good Paladin to my wandering bard.
Of course, the rules lawyers say, what if you power game by posting all the time? Not a problem, my friends. You can also set a monthly limit within your budget, so if I have a really prolific month, you'll never pay more than you're comfortable with. And you can withdraw your support at any time.
WHY SPONSOR LIZZIE'S BLOG?
Maybe you already love larp, maybe you play other games, but larp intrigues you, or maybe you don't know what larp is at all, and are dying for someone to just tell you already.
If you're at all interested in playing, designing, or organizing larp, I've got a ton of great resources on everything from how to explain larp to other people, to how to run a game of Danish freeform.
But writing these posts is expensive for me, because it costs me time and energy I could be using on paying projects; as a working writer in this economy, it's difficult to make ends meet. The projects that feed me (freelance work, and book writing) are always competing with the enjoyable ones that don't (writing about larp and making larps).
By supporting my blog, you're helping cover the cost of my time in reporting, writing, and editing my work, and encouraging me to post on a regular basis.
Normally, I post 1 to 4 times per month; the average is 2. Here are the sorts of posts I tend to produce:
My patrons have already made some great posts possible, from writing on the phenomenon of organizer burnout, thoughts on the intersections of race and game design. I've got some more new ideas up my sleeve, from profiles of the folks responsible for some truly spectacular larps to basic explanatory work around metatechniques. And of course, if there's something you're dying to read about, I'd love to know--maybe I can make that happen.
And of course, it is thanks to my patrons that my blog has moved to a shiny new URL, LeavingMundania.com.
REWARDS
For the most part, my patrons don't seem too interested in rewards other than my work on my blog. If you join me as a patron, you'll have my eternal and unshakable gratitude, of course, but I also have a few other things up my sleeve:

Normally, I post 1 to 4 times per month; the average is 2. Here are the sorts of posts I tend to produce:
- Explanatory -- breaks down useful, complex, and often misunderstood concepts, for example, "jeepform" or "Nordic larp" into easy-to-understand prose. A set of working definitions for anyone interested in larp.
- New in Larp -- keeps readers up to date on what's current, with a particular interest in games that are in dialogue with the Nordic tradition. Sample post here!
- How-Tos -- posts focused on teaching old and new organizers and designers the fundamentals of techniques they may have not yet encountered, such as pre-game workshopping or post-game debriefs.
- Theory -- meditations on gaming culture and design, for example, on challenges women game designers face, or on the emerging genre of American Freeform. My own thoughts on various gaming quandaries and phenomena, for example, American larp as national metaphor.
- Convention/Game Reports -- I travel the world's larp conventions trying weird games so you don't have to!
