About Library Of Africa and The African Diaspora ((LOATAD) formerly Libreria Ghana)

The Library Of Africa and The African Diaspora (LOATAD) is a decolonised library in Accra, Ghana that collects the works of African and African-descended writers from across the continent and the Diaspora. ⁣

We started out as a small library with modest ambitions in a suburb of Accra in December 2017 but, since our launch, we've evolved into a full-scale movement for the production, preservation, and dissemination of African and African Diaspora literature. We’re not simply a library; we’re in the process of building an institution and creating a legacy for present and future generations. So grand is our ambition to honour African and Diaspora literature, we’ve been featured on the BBC, Al Jazeera, France 24 and in Le Monde.

Our work is focussed on three key areas:⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
  • 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Creating knowledge using 𝘈𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘋𝘪𝘢𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘢 𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘶𝘭𝘶𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘴.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
  • 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Preserving the work and ephemera of African and Diaspora writers across generations through our 𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
  • ⁣𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Getting books and the knowledge they contain out to the people through our 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘭𝘪𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘳𝘺 on one hand, and our 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, on the other.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

Though we’re a private library, we’re a proudly activist library with a decidedly public mission to: ⁣⁣⁣
  • help restore Africa and her Diaspora's literary heritage⁣⁣⁣
  • bring Africa and the Diaspora together through books in physical and online spaces
  • make 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐥𝐥 a reality regardless of class, location, gender or age.⁣⁣⁣⁣

We've developed a range of innovative literacy programmes and events that move us out of the confines of the library and right into the heart of underserved communities across the country. Our programmes stimulate the imaginations of children and young people and open their minds to new ideas, new concepts, and new ways of thinking.

We have three community-based libraries in schools in underserved and disadvantaged areas in rural Ghana. We don’t just build libraries though; we build relationships. We support each of these libraries with a support programme developed in collaboration with the school, including reading and creative writing classes and scholarships for exceptional but underprivileged children.

We do all this voluntarily, but this is not sustainable.

Your contribution will help support us to continue to do our work of production, preservation, and dissemination and to deliver and develop a range of innovative new programmes and events for underserved communities and groups across Ghana.

Our work has only just begun.

Join us!

Thank you and please spread the word!
