About Long White Gypsy

I started the Long White Gypsy channel in 2018 after reading Cheryl Strayed's well-known book, Wild. The book documents Strayed's expedition on the Pacific Crest Trail through California and Oregon in a last-ditch attempt to turn her life around and 'find herself'. After reading the book (and subsequently watching the movie adaptation) I decided it was about time to embark on some self discovery of my own. I'd been suffering with anxiety and depression for almost 9 years, and I was still mourning the loss of the 'love of my life' almost 5 years previously. It was well and truly time for me to make something of my life, and so I decided then and there that I would thru-hike the Pacific Crest Trail.

I knew it would involve preparation and training on a level I'd never experienced before. So I looked around for long trails near me. I was surprised to find that not only is there a long trail in Australasia, it's actually located right here in New Zealand. Te Araroa or 'The Long Pathway' is a 3,000km trail across the North and South Islands, along sand, through bush, down river and over mountains. I began preparing to hike the trail almost immediately, and in the process made the decision to document my journey ... not just for myself, but for the thousands of people out there who also struggle with introversion, depression and anxiety on a daily basis.

I know from experience that getting out into the wild can be both a calming and anxious experience. But it is through this process that I have been able to grow. Each challenge I face, though often terrifying in the moment, grows my confidence and makes me stronger. I've learned not to expect to cure my mental illnesses, but to learn to live with them and take them ONE FOOTSTEP AT A TIME.

In addition to the mental health benefits, I thoroughly enjoy the creative aspect of making videos for my subscribers, and in the summer of 2019/20 i'm looking forward to documenting my thru-hike of Te Araroa on my channel.

All patrons will have access to behind the scenes posts, exclusive photos and other content, and will be able to follow my thru-hike in almost real time (episodes on my channel will be delayed by up to 1 month). Additional benefits for higher tier patrons include:
  • Regular Q&A sessions from the trail on my zero days once I hit 50 patrons or 1,000 YouTube subscribers (whichever comes first).
  • Exclusive 'early access' to my YouTube videos before they become public for patrons who pledge $15/mo or more.

I really look forward to having you all along for the ride.
Happy Hiking,
Long White Gypsy

Once I have hit 50 Patrons, I would like to provide private Q&A sessions from my upcoming thru-hike of Te Araroa. I'd like to make sure there is a set number of patrons subscribed before I commit to this, as it will take up to 2 hours out of my Neero or Zero days which I will need to maximise for strategising further resupplies, and resting up ready for the next section.
