Why is this British Geek dude asking for money?

1. Adverts Suck
I want to be able to just get rid of all that stuff. The Google Ads, the media ads, the affiliate ads. They suck and they just take up space.

The leading news source in the Thanet Space right now has so many adverts it can take a full five to ten minutes for them all to load just so you can shut them down again and read the news item. That is bonkers.

I want to provide that hyper-local niche and others with an alternative. Good content; no adverts. All I need is to be able to afford to live without the adverts.

2. I love giving my stuff away
When I find a cool new way to do something or write a definitive guide to something I don't want to sell it. I honestly just want to give it away.

I believe that if I loved making it, then there will be people who love using, reading or watching what I made just as much. That goes doubly when what I have produced is something no one else has even though it seemed obvious to me that it was needed.

3. I've got bills to pay like everyone else
Just like everyone else I have got to pay my bills, empty my bin and call my mum at least once a month to let her know I'm still alive. These things are just things that people need to do.

Also, web servers are expensive, sometimes wicked expensive. There is no getting away from the fact that life just ain't free. Some of the stuff I would like to be doing and giving away is going to need crazy expensive servers to do well.

That leaves me with a choice: Do I sell my work to people who might not appreciate it or do I bury the work in adverts that no one wants to see.

There has to be a better way.

I took a look at the content I was already putting out.

It has been two years since I was writing tutorials and other stuff with any regularity for those sites. Two years! Two years since I was able to fully embrace my passions to do for free what I'd charge an employer an eye-watering large pile of cash to do.

The Fantastic Site of Lord Matt was created to showcase cool geek stuff. One of the things I would like to be able to justify doing regularly are tutorials on how to develop in PHP like a boss. Not only that but there are a lot of cool projects that I could pretty much just give away if and only if I can justify the time needed to finish them.

What I did best was making boring and complicated subjects interesting and simple.

I love doing that. I love breaking down the way I code and explaining it so anyone can do what I do. I've got a massive pile of lessons plans stacked up just because all I really want to do is show other people that running a website is fun and does not need to be expensive.

I saw businesses trying to start and being stung for as much as half their start-up cash for little more than a postcard website. These businesses usually cannot afford the going rate for someone with my skill set. They shouldn't have to. That's what the lessons plans were about giving my skills to owners of small businesses so they don't need to shell out for people like me.

My skills are much better put to use building crazy new stuff that I would need a book to explain properly. Meanwhile, I really do enjoy teaching people what I know.

Please help me share my skills with everyone.

You will be sponsoring me to write the kind of in-depth tutorials I am famous for and as a side effect sponsoring the creation of a lot of other solid and interesting stuff.

Wait, there's more

Geek stuff is not my only passion I actually want to be able to bring the world a whole bunch of great stuff from politics reviews to coding tutorials. Don't worry if you do not fancy all of that. Each different content type is on a different website. All the good stuff you want without the stuff you do not want.

Thanet Star was created with the aim of bringing a fresh voice to Thanet and has grown to try and fill the void left by a lack of good reporting and local news. It has been our objective for some time to be the voice of the people of Thanet. To truly do that we need to stop worrying about paying the bills and focus on reporting the news and helping other people to do the same.

The Fantastic Site of Lord Matt was created to showcase cool geek stuff. I've already told you about that. It's where these tutorials are going to go.

There's more, a lot more. I dream of being able to create a space where people that are good at teaching other people stuff can write great articles and get paid. You will be helping me find and justify the time and resources to make that real.

You're not just supporting the creation of amazing tutorials. You are supporting the creation of opportunities. Opportunities I hope might even benefit my patrons. I'm not asking you to risk a huge amount to let me chase a dream just a few coins a week.

In return, I will attempt to amaze you.

My Promise To You

I am going aim to produce four solid, deep, well thought out tutorials supported by unique and useable code. If I produce more than that, then those extra tutorials are free. I'm not going to charge my amazing supporters for anything more than four a month. So a $1 pledge is a $4 a month commitment.

You can set a monthly limit so you never go over budget if you want but I believe in being up front about what I am doing and why I am doing it. If I don't 100% deliver on all my promises, then call me out on it - how else will I learn?

My promise to you is this I will produce four amazing tutorials a month, maybe more, and with the funding you provide for those articles I will produce a huge crap-tonne of free stuff that everyone can enjoy. I will also sneak out the odd thing that is just for you. (I know where my bread is buttered).

Support this project and unleash the geek to go make amazing stuff.

Goals
$0 of $25 per In-Depth Tutorial (Up to 4 a month)
This the monthly cost of running the server but reaching it means that both sites are properly pulling their weight. More importantly, I will be able to justify the time it takes to record a weekly podcast with interviews with local politicians, minor stars and some of our salt of the earth readers and listeners for Thanet Star as well as creating in depth tutorials for the Fantastic Site.
