AHOY FRIENDS!

If you're here, you know who I am.

If you like what I write, please consider supporting my work here on Patreon. In return, I have some helpful rewards laid out below.

Good, you're still reading. I could tell you that, on a basic level, hosting, emails, domain names, server space, and software make bills rack up quickly when running websites. If you support my writing for these purposes, I salute you. You're a hero.

But that's not what, fundamentally, this page is about.

Let me tell you something else instead.

For years, I've been a member of many paid, online intellectual circles. I was looking for a home where I could have inspiring intellectual conversations. Yet even in these places, the signal-to-noise ratio is bad, and spending time on there has a low ROI, for two main reasons:

  1. They're not focused on achieving a common goal. Members care more about "winning" an argument than creating genuine understanding or building the most accurate map. It's mostly about signaling cleverness, rather than furthering the discussion. Jargon and lengthiness often prevent refutation of claims made.
  2. They don’t lead to genuine growth. The form of these learning communities suggests participants absorb knowledge by reading these sentences, then change their minds, after which they post a helpful contribution, which others read and use to update their mental models, and so forth. Sequences of words, in sequences of lines, in sequences of posts. This model, called transmissionism is a false theory of learning. It doesn't work.

This suggests a surprising conclusion: Traditional learning communities are surprisingly bad at conveying knowledge, and readers mostly don’t realize it.

I have looked for something better. It didn't exist. So let's build a true nerd's utopia.

After years of online and offline experiment, I believe I've found the formula for structuring environments and conversations to (i) make participation selective, (ii) increase efficiency and effectiveness such that you get more learning at a time investment lower than active membership in most other communities requires and (iii) make it a fun place to be.

Here are the key ingredients:
  1. We structure our contributions using a premises-conclusion structure (bullet-points only).
  2. I design and continually update topic-based meta-mindmaps.
  3. Elaboration beyond the bullet-points is only allowed using voiceclips or videos (no text), forcing you to maximize your own understanding by leveraging the most effective learning path (teaching others).

If this makes your heart beat faster, you should join the community.

See you on the other side,
Maarten

You're here. You're supporting me and that's huge. Thank you!!

You won't believe it, but when you send out weekly emails to thousands of people, every single dollar matters.

Fan
$5 or more per month

Hosting, emails, domain names, server space, software and books cost money (not even counting research hours).  Your pledge will add up to a very meaningful amount over the course of a year.  You allow me to focus 100% on creating my best work for you. And for that, I'm forever grateful.

Here's what I give in return:

+ If you want to print a post, or read it offline, or go crazy with notes, a pdf is probably the way to go. Fans get access to profesionally designed pdfs of ALL my 150+ essays.

COMMUNITY
$10 or more per month

Everyone who supports with $10 or more a month gets to  be a part of this passionate community.

Here's what that means:

+ All lower reward tiers

+ You'll have access to my activity feed here on Patreon where we're creating understanding using my special [bulletpoints + voiceclips + mindmaps] method as laid out in the description. There are special rules to our discussions to make sure they are targeted, easy to catch up on, and maximize learning benefit. This is the secret ingredient of our learning community.

+ There will be a monthly open thread to check in and discuss whatever you like.

+ You get access to a small-group private supporters' mailout with  a reflection/expansion on key insights from our learning community and my corresponding meta-mindmap. Even if you lack the time, I will keep you in the loop. Because you're a part of the learning community.

Information sponge
$25 or more per month

This is a lot of money to give a writer. I salute you. THANK YOU.

I want to show my love to you, what about:

+ All lower reward tiers
+ A monthly email list featuring a reading list and not-public content. I'll send you a monthly summary of (i) my best resources with (ii) exclusive notes. I’m always finding interesting articles, bits of research, cool new ideas, and would love nothing more then to share and discuss these with you. I explain what's interesting about each find, and how it ties into the broader themes of our community. You can also suggest resources for me to include in here.

Board of directors
$50 or more per month

Wow - you're the best! I want to meet you! To show my gratitude, and learn from you, and help you as best as I can.

Here's how:

+ You get all lower reward tiers
+ Once per month, I’ll do an hour-long, live video Q&A just for this much smaller group of supporters. You can ask me anything. Only heroes  who support with $50 or more get to participate and ask questions. If you can’t make it live, each session will be available to supporters right afterward as a recording.

Learning machines
$100 or more per month

IS THERE NO END TO YOUR GENEROSITY???

For this amount of money, the only thing I can give you is one-on-one time, so that's what you'll get. If you want.  You can pretty much just name it at this dollar amount.

+ All lower reward tiers
+ My offer: a monthly chat, or a discussion, or an analysis. This is flexible. We can discuss what you want.

When our learning community has some critical mass, I'll hire someone to design an interactive mindmap of our points and counterpoints, like so (only it would be topic-based, not chronology-based, like the one in the link).
