AN INTRODUCTION

Hey! My name is Travis Phillips, founder of Some Weird Sin Records and co-founder of Supa Wicked Anime & Gaming.  I hope you've watched and enjoyed our featured video, a music video of Shawn Kosmo's "Wastoid", which was created by Shawn Kosmerly of Here Kitty Kitty Productions and released by Some Weird Sin Records. I’d like to tell you a little bit about Mad Suit Media House: who we are, what we do, what we’d like to, and how you can help (and get some pretty cool stuff in return).

Whether you agree with his politics or not, it’s undoubtedly true that Karl Marx was on the mark (see what I did there) when he spoke about work fulfillment. It is human nature to want to create, but not just anything. Something new. Something expressive. I believe the arts (music, film, animation, video games, books, etc.) are the purest manifestations of human nature, and in a culture where homogenization is not only accepted, but encouraged, we need art more than ever. Art without the restrictions placed upon it in big industry. The road to understanding each other as people, I’ve hypothesized, is this: honesty through entertainment. We have to make people enjoy understanding each other.

In 2013, my sophomore year at the University of Houston, I started working for Coog Radio, the campus’s radio station, as a radio host and writer. Up until this point, university had been nothing but a constant pressure to do things as assigned, to become a high functioning cog in someone else’s machine. A machine I didn’t even believe in. This was my desperate attempt to reclaim some sense of individuality and control for myself. I hosted a show called Some Weird Sin (in honor of the Iggy Pop tune), and every week, there were people who took time out of their day to listen to the music I thought was good, and listen to the things I had to say. It was never a huge show, but even then, it felt like the greatest validation of an existence there could be. I made something, and people enjoyed it.

By late 2014, I had an idea. I wanted to create a compilation record, featuring all of my favorite independent artists. This was Some Weird Sin Vol. 1. This originally came without any massive ambition attached to it: I wanted to be a part of making an awesome record, and I wanted to bring a little more attention to my show and station. However, a couple of the bands on the compilation, Indonesian Junk and Watergate Sandals, had their own projects they were looking to release, and suddenly, Some Weird Sin Records was founded in 2015.

In mid-2015, I was promoted to Music Director at Coog Radio. At this point, I began to see things behind the scenes that didn’t work, and that I was sure I knew how to fix. My ideas, however, weren’t taken seriously. I don’t think Coog Radio was much different than any place of work: there’s a hierarchy of power, and it’s very difficult to listen to somebody who you see as a subordinate, or a superior.

During this time, my friend Braden, who co-hosted the Some Weird Sin show with me towards the end of its run, mentioned wanting to do a gaming podcast. As we talked, we fleshed out the idea for Supa Wicked Anime and Gaming (or SWAG), a podcast/let’s play and review channel for anime and gaming. Then the ambition lightning bolt hit me: we’re going to going independent, and we’re going to create our own thing.

That thing is Mad Suit Media House.

Mad Suit’s structure is influenced by that of a podcast network or radio station, where Some Weird Sin’s beginnings lie. However, in this case, each podcast is a media business, and perhaps more importantly, still independent in the sense that we don’t dictate towards or restrict each other. We each maintain 100% creative control of our individual projects, while identifying with what Mad Suit represents, and assisting each other when we’re called on. We’re going to create a media business community focused on facilitating the artistic experience, a corporation without a CEO. This is, in many ways, a sociological experiment, and we’re coming to you as researchers and entrepreneurs, asking for your help.

Simply put, we have enough money to operate, but not to do everything that we’d like to do for everyone. We have many projects we’d like to tackle, but only so much money and time, and if we can receive some funding, we can spend the time we would spend on freelance work or hourly pay work, and use it instead to work for you. Of course, we don’t expect you to give us money for nothing, and we don’t expect you to give us money without sharing details. You’re our prospective investors, after all. Below, myself, Braden McMillin (co-founder of Supa Wicked Anime and Gaming), and Shawn Kosmerly (founder of Here Kitty Kitty Productions) will explain our businesses, our goals, how you can help, and what we can offer you in return.

SOME WEIRD SIN RECORDS (Founder: Travis Phillips)

Some Weird Sin Records is an independent record label founded by myself in 2015, with the goal putting out an assload of dope and affordable music on vinyl and cassette, as well as digitally. We had a good first year in terms of productivity with nearly 30 releases, but it’s now time to take things to the next level. Year one, we didn’t get to do much vinyl. Plain and simple, it’s expensive. Vinyl is my favorite format, and there are tons of tapes I did for bands that I wished I could do vinyl for, but the budget wouldn’t allow for it. Moving forward, we want to do more vinyl releases. Not just that, we also want to start reissuing cassette releases on vinyl.

I’d also like to tell you about Some Weird ‘Zine. I consider SWS Records to be a punk label, and ‘zines have been a staple of punk/independent/DIY culture for a long time from Sniffin’ Glue to Razorcake to No Friends. I would love to put a new spin on the format. The goal is to do a quarterly ‘zine featuring reviews, interviews, editorials, op-eds, the whole nine. The kicker? We’re going to have a staff of writers exclusively consisting of individuals involved in the independent music world beyond writing. Record reviews by people who make records, interviews and editorials by label owners, show reviews by venue owners. I want it to be a true inside look at the culture, an examination from the perspective of those who live it. Detailed, quality content from people who understand how the gears turn. I’ve spoken with several people who have expressed interest in being a part of the writing staff and I think together we can make something really special, but publishing costs money, and time is money, so we need your help to make this one happen.

Lastly, SWS just recently started dabbling in show promotion, and I really want to hit it hard in 2016. The thing is, I don’t like asking for a pay cut from shows, and I like to make merch for the featured bands, have exclusive free SWS merch, etc. I love doing it, but the promotional benefits don’t yet outweigh the money and time investment, so I can’t do as many as I’d like to. I don’t have a number we’re looking at to finance shows, but to anyone helps us with this, we’ll be making your cities and towns priorities for shows.

In recap, we need money for:
  • 1) MORE VINYL! (reissues of cassettes, and future releases)
  • 2) SOME WEIRD ‘ZINE! (WILL NOT HAPPEN WITHOUT YOUR HELP!)
  • 3) SOME WEIRD SHOWS!

In return for your help, we can offer:
  • 1) OUR THANKS! ($1 a month donation): You’re super rad for contributing without asking for anything back. If we hit our ‘zine goal, this will count as a subscription.
  • 2) TAPE CLUB! ($8 a month donation): Receive a copy of EVERY TAPE we release as long as you donate. This is an INSANE value for cassette lovers, we average 2-3 tapes a month.
  • 3) RECORD CLUB! ($15 a month donation): Receive a copy of EVERY RECORD we release as long as you donate. Record release rate will increase as funding does, and you will ALWAYS have first dibs on the rare variant.
  • 4) EVERYTHING CLUB! ($20 a month donation): Receive a copy of EVERY RELEASE we put out as long as you donate!
  • 5) EXCLUSIVE SHIRT! ($15): Receive a Patreon backer exclusive shirt that reads “Travis Phillips is my work bitch”! It also has my face on it. It’s a fun shirt.
  • 6) I WILL TATTOO YOUR NAME ON MY BODY! ($5000): I WILL TATTOO YOUR NAME ON MY BODY! It’ll be on my back in list form under the title “My employers”. You’ll get a picture of it. Yes, I stole this from No Friends. Yes, I’m asking for more. I am as appreciative, but slightly less stooped. This will become unavailable once I have 10 names permanently inked on my skin. It will probably be available for a while.
  • 7) ‘ZINE SUBSCRIPTION FOR ALL BACKERS IF WE HIT $1500 A MONTH!

That pretty much covers it!  I hope you'll check us out and provide your valued support!  For now I'll turn things over to Braden to explain Supa Wicked Anime & Gaming!

SUPA WICKED ANIME & GAMING (Founders: Braden McMillin and Travis Phillips)

Hi, my name is Braden McMillin and I’m the co-owner of SUPA Wicked Anime & Gaming (SWAG) along with Travis and we want to bring you entertainment that only demented nerds like us can bring.

We plan on having a Let’s Play series, an anime and gaming podcast, a Twitch streaming channel, and occasional videos of Travis and I doing pranks (Drive-Thru Movie, Community Hate, etc.)

Drive-Thru Movie:  This is a series where we go to a fast food drive-thru, and as we pay for our food, we also give them a DVD of a movie.  Could be Norbit, could be Eraserhead, either way, we expect an interesting reaction (and a thank you).  This series requires a little money to work, since we have to buy the DVD, and pay for the food.  We need $30 a month for this.

Community Hate:  A series where I basically troll a video game chat with the aim to incur the wrath of the gaming community.  I will be "playing" a very, very horrible person.  Racist, sexist, pro-abortion, pro-everything awful.  Should be fun.  We don't need money for this, but we'd appreciate it anyways.

So why should you support SWAG when there are millions of other Let’s Play channels out there? Simple: you are a sick human being and you hate the world around you and so does SWAG. We are full of rage. I’ve started to show signs of schizophrenia (runs in the family) and Travis has insomnia and mild clinical depression. So, our content should be… different.

We need money for a few different things, and we have a few goals.

We need money for:
  • 1) Games.
  • 2) Anime.
  • 3) Additional and replacement recording equipment (more mics, camera upgrades, computer upgrades, etc.)

Our goals:
  • 1) Drive-Thru Movie: $30 a month
  • 2) Computer Raffle!:  I will build a high-end computer each month and raffle it off to Patreon backers!  Each $ donated will count as a raffle ticket!  We'll need $5000 a month.
  • 3) SWAG video game!:  Travis and I will make a video game!  I'll code and Travis will scriptwrite, and every backer will receive a digital copy of the game if we reach our goal of $8000 a month.

In exchange for your support, we're offering some pretty cool rewards, including exclusive buttons and shirts, and the ability to boss us around!  So check those out, and we really appreciate any help you can give!

HERE KITTY KITTY PRODUCTIONS (Founder: Shawn Kosmerly)

Here Kitty Kitty Productions is an independent film production founded by Shawn Kosmerly in 2012. The goal is to put out high-quality music videos for low-budget, upcoming bands. Kosmerly has a very strange mind, which creates some of the most unique music videos out there today. HKK is planning on branching out into narrative and viral videos, but music videos will always be the focus. In only 3 years, HKK already has produced a dozen music videos, and looks to grow bigger, better and weirder.

The biggest issue up to this point is creating videos with no funds. All the content is compromised, which will sometimes limit a great idea. There’s no budget for props, the gear is quickly becoming outdated for the digital revolution, and Shawn works pretty much for free. With your donations, the funding would go towards the following:
  • 1) Sony a7s camera. $2,500 plus lenses and Atomos Shogun. This camera is the real-deal. It can shoot 4K, has a ridiculous ISO range and is the ideal camera for indie productions. Right now Shawn shoots on a Canon Rebel t4i, which is a nerdy wimp compared to this beast.  This is his sole finite financial goal, and he's hoping to bring in $250 a month towards it.
  • 2) Film crew. Shawn doesn’t do this alone, and with your help he can people who are better than him to make things look better.
  • 3) Better equipment. C-stands, light kits, flag kits, china balls, the list goes on. Although he has spent thousands on film gear, Shawn’s arsenal is still extremely limited. Help him make things look better!
  • 4) Food. Ya gotta eat and feeding a whole crew is hard stuff.

HKK has big plans on the way. If even a fraction of the goal is reached, the following would be created:
  • 1) Gorilla Session. A live-session web series that gets bands to play impromptu sets in public, while dodging security. Think Blogetheque meets flash-mob. If the series were to pick up, stand-up comedy would also be tackled.
  • 2) Music videos. With funding HKK would be able to make several videos a month, rather than the odd one now and then.
  • 3) Short films. HKK is in post-production of it’s first horror short “Hairspray Babes from Planet Bitch”. There are plans of making a short film every 3 months in hopes of gaining attraction for a full feature.
  • 4) Destrobots: the Musical: the Webseries. A webseries about world destruction, love, revenge and tunes. This series is being developed between HKK and Coolish Comedy and is expected to go into production the end of 2016.

As thanks for supporting HKK, Shawn can send you signed film frames, props, or even custom videos! We hope you'll support HKK in 2016!

IN CONCLUSION

This is a big undertaking, make no mistake, and we can't truly excel without your help.  And ANYTHING that you can do to help is appreciated, whether it's $1 a month, more, or just sharing with your friends.  We're covering a lot of ground and we want to the best bang for your buck investment you've ever made.  So stay tuned and look forward to an interactive, communal, artistic experience we hope will truly be something new in your life!
