Hi there! I'm Mairead. I write blog posts. I am a ............ writer. There I said it! Absolute notions! I discovered a fondness for it later in life at the grand old age of 32. It crept out of nowhere, an undiscovered talent which would allow me to share the most challenging time of my life with friends and family online. I have been writing about my story of navigating the murky world of stage 4 cancer for more than a year now and the story has gone farther than those few family and friends I intended on keeping in the loop. It has been the longest roller coaster ride of my life with lots of lows but even more highs.

What happened?
Cancer abruptly stopped me in my tracks and forced me to assess my life. What was I doing that brought me to that point? How did this happen? What do I do now and how do I get past this? How can I heal my body? So far, I have defied medical odds of survival. After being given a prognosis of ‘months rather than years’, I decided to forgo the miserable offer of palliative chemotherapy in favour of something more life giving and curative.

What did I do about it?
After diagnosis of stage 4 triple negative breast cancer in August 2016, I took on the challenge of getting my body back to full health. I quit my job and moved my family from the city to the country. I researched day and night about what would make me better. I consulted nutritionists, therapists, cancer survivors… I read blogs, books, websites, scientific papers, medical studies… I watched documentaries, YouTube videos, listened to podcasts… I soul searched, connected with myself on a deep level and took heed of signs from the universe... I was badly in search of anything which would help me overcome the diagnosis and outlive the prognosis. I delved into the conflicting and confusing world of alternative cancer treatments and tried every method which was ever credited with success. I have been there and done that in terms of alternative treatments. I wore the t-shirt. The t-shirt got too small and the cancer out grew it. I opted for an integrative cancer clinic in Istanbul which I’ve been attending since June 2017. After three months, I received my first clear PET scan which showed no signs of active cancer. I have continued to attend the clinic for maintenance treatment which has seen me enjoy two further clear PET scans. In July 2018, I had a recurrence.

Why the Patreon page?
Stage 4 treatment is expensive business. Between costs for tests, treatments, therapies, travel... it costs a small fortune. It's essential that I earn to pay for all of that and I can't exactly hold down a normal job at the moment. Could you imagine if I had a 9-5...! We spent a lot of money on past treatment also... Although I had intended on being finished in the clinic in Istanbul after 3 months, that wasn’t to be. I stayed for 13 months. Some very generous fundraising paid for the first 9 months of treatment costing €120,000. After that, it cost more than €30,000 and was a financial drain on myself and my family. Staying alive costs a lot of money eh? Can you help me by becoming a patron?

What do you get in return?
If you enjoy reading my posts, if you look forward to new blogs, if you have told me you enjoy my writing, that I should write a book or that you think I’m an inspiration, if you have shared any of my 40+ posts with someone with cancer, if you have learned anything from them or from any of the content I share on my blogFacebook or Instagram pages, please consider pledging to become a patron of mine. You can pledge as much or as little as you want. Every pledge will help us pay towards continuing medical treatment. The dream would be to make enough money on Patreon to pay for the medical expenses so that we can enjoy our lives. Life is short as I know too well. Spending every penny we have on treatment and not being able to have money to enjoy our lives is a bit soul destroying. This is not a charity plea. This is me being paid for creating content, for writing, researching and sharing what I’ve learned along the way with all of you. If you think that is worth supporting, I would be thrilled if you would become my patron. I will of course, continue to share my journey and my findings with you all through my social media. But it would make life a bit easier for me and my family if you would consider supporting us here.

Thank you for reading and I hope you want to support me!

THANK YOU!

P.s, my intro video needs re-recording as information has changed... bear with me...

Some Questions

How does Patreon work?
Patreon is a platform which allows people to create content and get paid for it. 'Creators' share their content with their 'patrons' who pledge money to them. Creators share music, film, vlogs, blogs, art etc. Here is a link to the about page of the company with a short, informative video.

Why do I pay in Dollars?
Patreon is based in the USA. Your pledge will be paid in your own currency and converted to Dollars.

Will you continue to blog for free?
Yes I will, I will continue to write on my blog and I have a feeling that with more pledges, my writing may become more frequent.

How often do you create content?
I write at least one blog monthly and I share other content on my social media channels such as recipes, dietary tips, toxin free products and how to make healthier choices. There are over 40 posts currently on my blog and lots more content on my social media.

I don't have much money, can I still become a patron?
Yes! You can pledge as much or as little as you like. But please only give if you can afford to do so.

Can I stop pledging if I can't afford it anymore?
Absolutely! You can cancel at any time. Please only pledge if you can afford to.
