Hey all!

If you hadn't guessed, I'm Shahana. On the surface, I'm a 30-something year old mom from North Dakota. I like to read, play video games, do any kind of craft I can find, and more. I'm married, own a house, have two kids and a dog (and seven rats). I'm pretty typical.

I also have bipolar disorder (and a whole mess of stuff that goes along with it, because bipolar never seems to show up alone... it's gotta bring a few friends). That means while the majority of my days are "stable," I also have bouts of hypomania and severe depression. As a parent, that's a special level of trouble.

Parenting is hard, no one will argue that. When you're parenting with chronic mental illnesses... well, that's a whole new challenge. And that's why I'm here.

There are a lot of us in this world. Parents with mental illnesses like depression, anxiety, ADD, bipolar, borderline, OCD, and so on - we exist as people, and yeah...we have kids. Our lives are filled with the normal joys and stresses of parenting, but underneath it all is an added layer. It's a layer that determines whether we can physically even get out of bed in the morning. Or whether we pack and repack the kids backpacks before they go to school. Or whether we drive them in every day and watch them until they're safe with a teacher because the alternative is too scary to comprehend.

A lot of times it feels like we can barely keep ourselves together, let alone a family. And yet. We manage it.

We are not alone. You are not alone.

Mama In Darkness is a blog about parenting with chronic mental illnesses. It's also a community of parents, kids, and loved ones living in our world. We fight every day to get to the next one, but we don't do it alone.

Help me keep this going so we can grow and get stronger!
Tiers
The First Step
$1 or more per 4 blog posts 0 patrons
Sometimes, you just have to take that first step. At this tier you get:

  • Your name (or the name of someone you want to support/remember) on a special page of the Mama In Darkness blog
Building a Community
$5 or more per 4 blog posts 0 patrons
If you can manage a little more, I can do a little more.  We can work together to build this community. At this tier you will get all of the above (of course!), plus:

  • The opportunity to promote your own blog or a community/charity that you support.

A note: links must be appropriate, so I will need final approval.  If, for some reason, I'm unable to accept a link, you will have the opportunity to choose another.

Building Others Up
$15 or more per 4 blog posts 0 patrons
Choosing this level will put me over halfway towards paying maintenance costs for this blog. That's a really big deal! Your support would dramatically increase my ability to create a better and stronger community. At this level, you would of course get the previous benefits plus:

  • A handmade thank you card from me. Pretty for you, and a bonus for me...I can always use an excuse to get out some crafting supplies.
Shaping the Community
$25 or more per 4 blog posts 0 patrons
At this level, you will single-handedly pay for blog maintenance and make it easier for me to expand into new content areas and improve existing ones. As a thank you, you'll get everything above as well as:

  • The opportunity to directly influence blog content.  Got a brilliant idea? Or want to do a Q & A? Let me know and I'll make it happen. I have a whole list of ideas, but at this level, you'll be bumped to the top.  So, let's make it happen.

Note: as above, I reserve the right of final approval. I will always give you the ability to choose again.

Creating A Better Future
$100 or more per 4 blog posts 0 patrons
This is the stretch goal, here.  If you are able to support me at this level, you will be making a huge difference in the future of this blog and my personal life.  At this level, you will obviously have all the previous benefits, but I will also create and send to you a handmade gift.  I am by no means a fantastic artist, but it will be made with complete love.
Goals
$0 of $10 per 4 blog posts
Just $10 a month would let me set up Facebook ads to help grow our community. It's so important that we get the word out to let other parents and loved ones with mental illnesses know there are resources and other people like them.  Let's get out there and help!
