Editing the novel
I may work as an editor but I cannot edit my own work thanks to the vagaries of my brain. So instead I have to hire an editor to make sure my novel is shipshape at the end.
But having worked in the industry and having struggled myself, I want to pay the person I hire a fair rate for their time and work and I am hoping to pay them at a rate of $80 per 1000 words. $2000 would be a fantastic start.
Because I want to produce the best work I can but I want to ensure everyone is treated fairly as I do so.

Hi!
Who am I?
My name is Marisa Wikramanayake. *waves madly* I am a writer, editor and journalist. I first published a book at 17 and now I am trying to finish off the manuscript for my novel Sedition and, guess what? You can help me!
What is Sedition?
Sedition is a novel set in Sri Lanka in 2005 just after the tsunami and it's the story of three people who are struggling trying to figure out what they want and need to be doing with their lives and how to prevent the world from sort of caving in on them during the process. It's a funny book with a few sad bits here and there and a lot of things to think about.
What do you get?
Free copies, photos with me, shoutouts and thank yous and phone calls with me and dinner dates but also yourself immortalised in fiction because I will name a character after you. And one time donors, I adore you too, so pay whatever you like and cancel your pledge once it has gone through. And thanks. I adore you guys. Also if you're writing a book too or are just keen on knowing about the process, I will also host a monthly Google Hangout for Patreon supporters only where you can brainstorm ideas with me and ask me all your writing related questions.
Where does the money go?
I will be saving up to pay an editor $80 per 1000 words to have their wicked way with my draft once it is done but if I get more than I need, I will be donating it to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation to help them get books to kids and increase their literacy levels. My book is between 60,000 to 90,000 words so it will cost between $4800 to $7200 to edit.
And once the book is over? I will update Patreon and let you know what I am working on next - it could be another book or a documentary or something really cool. Basically, you are helping me tell stories in whatever way I can and I appreciate it.
Much love, Marisa. :)
