Slavic folklore is rich, varied and imaginative. It reflects the hopes and fears of its people, and binds them deeply to the nature's cycles. I want to share it with you.

Who am I?
My name is Mariya Prytula, and I am an illustrator. Ever since I can remember, I have been fascinated with written and oral tales. I remember sitting in my grandmother's kitchen reading traditional old-wife's healing recipes and supernatural stories or hanging on to every word of a folk song. I devoured any fairy tale and history book I could get my hands on, boundaries between the imaginary and the real hopelessly merged.

It is a project long time in the making to record these stories in my own visual language. Some of them are well known and favorite among Slavophiles, while others may have just been heard in passing and latched on to me. But as any good story, they are worth sharing and preserving.

Great! How will you get it done?
Through the months of September (#sketchtember) and October (#inktober) I'll be working on concepts for pieces illustrating Slavic fairy-tale and folklore. Sketches will be developed in September and then some of them inked in October. Favorites will then be painted in detailed watercolor throughout the year, and the resulting works will be assembled into a sketchbook.

Though my primary knowledge is of Ukrainian and Russian folklore, I do hope this project will become a yearly obsession leading to travel in search of little known and forgotten Slavic myths and curiosities before they are hopelessly lost.
