About

Mark All My Words
is a weekly online photo journal of nature + culture. Stories from Mark All My Words have appeared on Vietnam Travel and Trade Portal, ReBirth, Base Camp at Grand Lake, and Body and Soul Nourishment, among many others. All writing, photography, editing, and research is the sole work of me, Mark Miles, and I have been solely responsible for running this journal since its inception in 2015.

At Mark All My Words, every weekly story requires an average of 20 hours of work, which--as you can imagine--represents a significant part-time job. Add to this the fact that there is absolutely no advertising, corporate sponsorship, or outside influence on Mark All My Words, and you have a superior source of original online photojournalism that is accountable to one person and one person only: you.

But just because there’s no outside influence on Mark All My Words doesn’t mean there aren’t expenses for its upkeep. These include: photographic equipment, site plan, transportation, health insurance, research, editing, domain-name registration, and generally trying to keep all the appendages of this unruly online beast from getting out of hand.

I’m here for one reason and one reason only: to grow this journal. But in order to do that effectively for the long haul, there are several things that need to happen:

  1. I need to upgrade my site plan on Wordpress from Personal to Premium. Though I’m able to do some of the things I need to do at my current level, there are many other things (site customization, access to plug-ins, premium themes, greater storage) that are not currently available to me. These deficiencies make the experience of using Mark All My Words cumbersome at times. And I’d like to change that.
  2. I need to get health insurance to ensure that in the event of a medical emergency--which is all too likely due to an undiagnosed chronic illness from which I suffer--I will be able to recover in a timely manner and resume the work of running Mark All My Words.
  3. I need to get a new digital camera to replace the one I now have--which, as it turns out, is nothing but my phone. Now, if I had the latest model iPhone, this might not be absolutely necessary. But the fact is, I have nothing but a Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact, which takes decent photos but not nearly the quality that I would like. (The only reason my photos look as good as they do is because I edit them several times before uploading them to Mark All My Words. And of course I only ever upload the best of the best.)
  4. I need to hire a research/editorial assistant at some point to alleviate the over-extension of my own abilities that results from my current workload. Though I do possess many talents (writing, photography, research, and editing not least among them), I am not in fact a standing army. Therefore it’s occasionally beyond my ability to do some things on Mark All My Words, and an assistant would be tremendously helpful.
  5. I would like to put out a call for submissions at some point in the indeterminate future. In order to do this with the best interests of other authors in mind, however, I would need to offer some kind of payment, which is not a viable proposition at this time. But if I were to receive sufficient funding through this Patreon campaign, I would be able to start paying other authors to write for Mark All My Words.

While it would be lovely to assume that the only incentive you need to contribute monetarily is the work I’ve already done through Mark All My Words, that’s probably not the case. On the contrary, if you’re like most people, you’ll want some kind of personalized return on investment. And, as someone who has to watch every penny spent, I completely understand.

So here are a few of the benefits I’ll be offering to patrons:

  1. Your name featured on a thank-you webpage on Mark All My Words where visitors to the site will be able to see the role you played in ensuring its future
  2. A monthly poll to determine the topic of at least one story on my site in the following month
  3. A limited number of unreleased photos--available nowhere else on the internet--in full resolution and optimal aspect ratio, without watermark
  4. Exclusive videos of never-before-seen content from blog posts, hikes, and explorations
  5. Personalized photo edits (You send photos; then I edit and upload them to an unlisted page for you to download.)
  6. A personalized and hand-written letter of thanks from me to you
And of course you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that you're helping to ensure the future of one of the few sources of truthful and relevant nature photojournalism available on the internet today.
Goals
$29 of $50 per month
After I reach this goal, I will upgrade my site plan on Wordpress from Personal to Premium. This will ensure increased accessibility on Mark All My Words and allow me to streamline certain layout features (menu, widgets, et al.) that are currently somewhat cumbersome.
