About Mass Hysteria

We are MassHysteria; an all-female collective formed of twelve multinational dance artists based in SE London. We aim to present young women’s artistic practice and experiences as a matter of necessity.
MassHysteria believes in the significance of sharing young women’s artistic practice. The fusion of members’diverse experiences in visual arts, science, music, literature and philosophy, we passionately offer transdisciplinary creations that celebrate collaboration as an essential and integral art form. MassHysteria is a fluid body, adaptable and in constant transformation and aims to facilitate new hybrid connections within the realm of contemporary movement practice.
Since our founding in 2017, our practice has developed into two main strands: the creation and presentation of new work and MASSHYSTERIAPRESENTS: events to celebrate the marginalised artist, offering to host work at our events for free. We successfully offered 8 such events across 2017-2018, hosting over 60 young and upcoming artists to a 2000 strong total audience of their peers, fellow enthusiasts and established artistic practitioners. At each event MassHysteria would present new work, both as a collective and as individual members, to expand our audiences whilst offering a platform for the artistic community of SE London.
In 2019 MassHysteria was awarded the Trinity Laban Innovation Award; a monetary award for graduates to fund their artistic practice for the year after graduation. With this we received mentorship from Gitta Wigro, established our online visual image and created a new piece.
We presented our latest choreographic work ‘Yoga in the park‘at The Place’s Resolution Festival 2020; reviewed by DanceArtJournal as presenting “everything that is left unsaid or that is said but not fully comprehended through words”
In February 2020 we exhibited ‘MassHysteriaPresents: The Game‘at Tate Modern. We were invited by Laura Woods to share the collective’s diverse bodies of work; solos, audience participatory activities, screen dance works and concluding in an open discussion surrounding female power led by Gitta Wigro.
