About Material Matters with Grant Gibson

Material Matters is a podcast from design writer Grant Gibson. The idea is that the former Blueprint and Crafts editor talks to a designer, artist, architect or maker about their relationship with a particular material or technique.

This acts as a starting point to learn more about their career and life. The show has been going for over two years now and during that time Grant has spoken to the likes of Edmund de Waal (on porcelain); Tom Dixon (on welding); Yinka Ilori (on colour and narrative); and Polly Morgan (on taxidermy), to name just a handful.

Each season also includes an episode in which Grant talks to someone with an overview on the worlds of design and architecture. In series one, for instance, he chatted to the New York-based curator and critic Glenn Adamson about material intelligence, while more recently he chewed the curatorial fat with MoMA curator Paola Antonelli. As The Observer’s audio critic Miranda Sawyer wrote in her review of the show when it was launched in 2019: ‘These are enlightening, informed interviews. Recommended.’

Material Matters is independently run and your backing will help it flourish in the future. Many thanks.
