Seth Kimmel bass #33

woohoo! Here's yet another update on the bass. It's looking great and I'm getting so very antsy. To the left you'll see the inside of the bass (with all the bracing) before the top got glued on. In the center we've got the body all ready and waiting for the varnish. And to the right is a close up of the "button" (the back of the neck's heel)--I asked Seth if he could do that raindrop perfling special for me :)

Here's my favorite part so far! I spent a *lot* of time deciding on the specific piece of wood Seth was going to use for the back of this bass. It's a highly quilted piece of western maple, and although it's difficult to see the actual quilting in these pictures, even the watery grain of this wood is breathtaking! This bass is being constructed with a "flat-back" (as opposed to a curved/arched back). The flat-back is much thinner, and needs to be braced in order to add strength. Here you see Seth using a more modern system of bracing, with a diagonal bars as opposed to more traditional cross-bars. This helps with the long term health of the instrument as the wood continues to expand and contract through weather changes... but really what's it matter it's gorgeous! :p

Here's an update on the bass Seth Kimmel is working on for me! This shows an evolution of the top of the bass from the carving, to the "ff" holes, to the bass bar bracing on the underbelly. Fascinating! :)

exciting news!

Friends! As you may (or may not) know, my main gig is being a classical double bass player. It's what I went to school for and I'm so very lucky to get to perform with the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra. This kind of work requires fantastically crafted instruments by highly regarded makers. So I decided to commission a double bass to be made for me by an amazing luthier by the name of Seth Kimmel. He just sent me the first pictures of the build! This is the initial rough carving of the neck/scroll of the instrument. I feel like a child waiting for Christmas morning!! :D

Hey all! The last two weeks have been *full* of drum tracking for the upcoming Mantra album. This is one of the most tedious aspects of the whole process--but I love it! As you can see in this picture, I've finally got a few more sound baffles up and running, and they help immensely to tighten the capture. The bleed in my small room is very difficult to work with, and I really need to make a ton more, but I'm so very happy with what I've got so far! More soon! :) matt

Merry Christmas!

hello friends! This song (and video!) has been *long* overdue. "House of Glass" was one of the first tracks that was recorded for the upcoming album (over two years ago). And it's original form even predates my joining the band--nearly four years ago! Once I started playing in Mantra, I did my best to make my parts for the already completed songs as much "my own" as I could manage while keeping the integrity of the form and feel. Jason (our lead vocalist) was the original bass player, and kept the bass lines pretty sparse and open ended, which gave me a lot of room while writing my craziness in underneath the song. I have a tendency to get complicated and busy, even during mellow parts, as the first half of "House of Glass" demonstrates. I followed Jason's original skeleton, but added a lot of nuanced rhythmic and melodic movement that Mark (our drummer) had fun syncing up with. I wasn't a fan of the original bridge, and nobody had any clue how to improve it even as we started tracking the song! Since I had been recording the instruments one by one--drums, then bass, rhythm guitar, lead guitar, vocals, and finally backup vocals--it basically came down to individual collaborations between me and each player to build it into something cohesive. It was pretty rough, and I had no clue how well the ideas would translate until everything was said and done. I had to really believe in my personal overview of the song as I've essentially been playing producer... and well, it is what it is :P This is also the last track that features our former lead guitarist. Our third, and final video will finally show off our fantastic replacement in the flesh! Stay tuned for that sometime in 2015!! ha... In the mean time, I hope you enjoy this one. Have a great rest of the year, and I'll see you in 2014!! :) matt

mantra - distractions

Hello friends, and Happy Halloween! This track is probably the heaviest from Mantra's upcoming album, and it comes at the best time of year for it >:) It's also the first track I've finished with our new lead guitarist! It's pretty ridiculous how much of a change one member can make to the overall feel of a song!* All the other instruments were tracked back when we still had our original guitarist, so there wasn't much room for budging on the composition, but Paul was still able to make it his own. For each instrument, I help to produce/compose the details with each person while we track the parts, so we all have to retain a very strong sense of where we want to take the song--it's a huge process! We've another two songs like this where Paul will have to fill some odd shaped cracks, and then a final two to track from scratch... When will this album ever end?! For those of you that listen to the tracks back-to-back, you may notice some rather large tonal discrepancies between Misguided Adoration and Distractions. Not only is this due to the change in persona, but small tweaks will need to happen towards the end to tidy everything up, as well as a final "mastering" stage that will help to get each track feeling like they belong together. I'm also still finding the sound of the album as it seems to get better every time! I'm just hoping I'll be able to mask the change in players well enough that it isn't distracting! Anyway, I'll post up some more insights into the process in the next few days. And up next I'm eyeing that second videoSong that Mantra's had on the back burner for a while. Or if I burn out, maybe I'll work on another track from my own album! Choices, choices... Enjoy! :) *I've considered uploading the old version we did a couple years back at a local recording studio for you guys to hear and compare ...but it's pretty terrible... so let me know if any of you really are curious :P

wow. All I've been doing for the last two months has been being nocturnal and mixing tracks for the two upcoming albums I'm working on. I'm nearly finished with a heavy track from Mantra's album called "Misguided Adoration", so I'll post that up soon! In the mean time I'll be posting little glances into the processes that I take while mixing crazy projects like these. And further down the line, as Mantra starts to track the last couple of songs for the album, I'll take you through the entire recording process :) There will even be a couple more Mantra videoSongs coming out as we get closer to finishing! Exciting! Whew. Oh, and more from my album as I find the time, too! wait... what time? aghhh. matt

wow, so I've got a couple new things that I'm very excited about! The first is my Komplete 9 upgrade (after mentioning how much version 7 influenced me, this is quite a step up!) which I hope means lots of crazy new stuff in the future :) The second is that box of lights in the foreground. It's called a Monome. It's... well it's just that--a box of lights; an extremely minimalist interface that allows for open ended use. In other words you pretty much have to program everything that it does. It's been around for a while now, so there's a bunch of apps available that others have made and shared with the public. I'm still wrapping my head around the whole thing. I've started learning the basics of programming with Max/Msp, but I think it's going to take much time for me to sift through, much less make anything that works or is remotely useful to me... ha! I will definitely keep you posted though, especially because I'm stoked about the possibilities :D In the mean time, if you're curious, give Monome a search on vimeo or youTube. It's very interesting to see what people do with it!

the first track from "launch"

Friends! I'm extremely excited about this release! "asphalt" is the opening track to a short album that I've been working on for a very, very long time. I had begun to fear this project wouldn't ever see the light of day! "launch" will be a collection of five songs that mark my introduction into the electronic music realm. It started after acquiring Native Instrument's "Komplete 7" (a massive collection of virtual instruments and effects), and was extraordinarily inspired by the sheer amount of power it gave me. Over the course of the next couple of years, I spent countless hours composing and mixing this craziness into being. "asphalt" is the intensely energetic introduction track. It's busy and I hope it makes your head spin--all for the better :) Enjoy! matt

aghhh I've finally gotten a vocal track that I can work with! This shoddy cubicle has been my home for the last couple of weeks. It's been a bit like pulling teeth with the majority of my nights ending around 6am. I threw away at least four or five fully edited vocal takes for the verse, and couple more for the chorus. Funnily enough, I've kept the bridge from the first day of tracking. I think all the extra pushing was worth it, though. The takes aren't perfection, but the vibe is there. And with that behind me, onward to the video editing and final mix! There's light at the end of this tunnel again! :)
