Music is woven into the fabric of American culture. I bring this music to life through research, content curation, writing, public speaking, performing, and recording. My mission is to share America’s rich musical heritage with others. I want to do my part to keep this cultural foundation present in people's lives. I believe in the power of music to help us better understand other people and cultures throughout the world.

Immigrants, both voluntary and involuntary, have been carrying instruments, songs, and musical styles to America's shores for centuries. Unique forms of music evolved through the interactions of people from vastly different backgrounds - something only possible in a nation of immigrants. These emergent genres, which I refer to as American heritage music, include traditional folk songs, fiddle tunes, spirituals, work songs, ballads, sea shanties, railroad and cowboy songs, Appalachian music, ragtime, minstrel, blues, jazz, jug band, rhythm and blues, old-time, country and western, bluegrass, and rock & roll.

The work that I do includes:
  • Writing and publishing the American Heritage Music blog that highlights genres, songs, stories, people, and instruments
  • Posting relevant news items, articles, and podcasts from other creators to my Patrons here and my followers on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Tumblr
  • Creating free resources for teachers to use in the classroom that leverage America's rich musical heritage to engage students in the story of the United States
  • Performing live shows for audiences of all ages that combine songs and spoken word to tell the story of the people and music of the United States
  • Recording and releasing audio recordings and videos
  • Researching and learning to play songs and instruments

This work can get expensive. Purchasing books for research, conference and workshop attendance fees, music and recording equipment purchases, and web hosting fees are just some examples. Patreon has become a vital way for creators like me to offset these expenses so we can do more work and reach more people.

Thank you for your interest and your role in keeping this valuable cultural legacy present in people's lives through your financial support.
