Hey!

If you stumbled onto this page, I assume you came from my videos and already know who I am, so I'll skip any long introductions.

WHO AM I?

The short version is, I'm Matthew Vere, I'm 24 and online I go by the artist alias 'Vanity'. I create content on Beats by Vanity TV, a YouTube channel that reverse engineers an artists sound, monthly (ish). I also run an audio sample library company, Samples by Vanity, that releases a sample pack alongside each tutorial.

I started making music production tutorials selfishly. Because I couldn't find the tutorials I wanted to watch, I decided to make them. There's a quote from Austin Kleon's book 'Steal Like an Artist' that I try and live my life by:

“The manifesto is this: Draw the art you want to see, start the business you want to run, play the music you want to hear, write the books you want to read, build the products you want to use-do the work you want to see done.”

My highest educational qualification in audio production is a bachelor of science with honours degree. I only share this as I want everyone who watches my content to know a little more about the source behind my tutorials. You do not need a degree, nor any qualification to become an electronic artist, and I'd argue the degree did little more than connect the dots to my studies outside of traditional education. With the age of the internet, where anyone can present anything as factual, I think it's only necessary that you know who your information is coming from.

WHAT WILL I DO WITH YOUR MONEY?

The money from pledges goes solely into content generation for the YouTube channel. The biggest area here is time. Allowing me to spend more time producing the tutorials and upload more content to YouTube. I consider the sample libraries a separate entity as they are a product for sale, that pays for themselves. But I am offering them and the projects as a reward, so I'd like to explain my thought process behind this below.

HOW ARE YOU USING PATREON?

I believe there are two ways to think about Patreon; one is a donation platform in where you generously give someone a donation because you enjoy their work and want to see more of it. I've kept this tier at $1 as, with enough Patrons, this could become a substantial income for any artist or content creator. You can donate more than $1 if you wish, but it is not a requirement to become a Patron.

The the next four tiers are a combination of a donation and a product/service reward. I'm offering various products and services at a 75%+ discount price. I call this a combination as you are still supporting me and the content I produce, but it's less of handing me money and not truly knowing where it goes, and more of me providing you with some level of value in return.

HOW DOES IT ALL WORK?

It's fairly simple, but to those who are new to Patreon, my profile works like so:

1. You sign up and pledge an amount of your choice, from one of the four tiers available on the right side of the page (may be different on mobile).
2. You're not charged anything until I next upload a video.
3. You're ONLY charged when I upload a video, which if you know my upload schedule, will be at least 1 month, often longer. I'll never charge more than once a month, but often it's 2 months or more. I've made a new account so that you're only charged when you receive new content in return. I'm hoping this method is much fairer in the long run.
4. Every time I upload a video, you won't be charged until the first of the next month. If I upload on January 2nd, you won't be charged until February 1st, this is just how Patron operates.
5. If you'd like to cancel your pledge, you can do so at any time. You can also change it, pause it, whatever you'd like.
6. If for any reason you'd like a refund, just send me a message and I'll sort it out for you.

FAQ:

1. Upload Schedule?

I know, I know. Outside of the tutorials, this is another of my main projects, figuring out how to condense the production time while not sacrificing quality. It's an ongoing battle that I suspect will never be completely won, perhaps the tug of war is a necessary evil.

Initially, the videos only took 2 weeks to produce, however these where of lesser quality, much shorter in length featuring more of a loop than an example track. I'm always wanting to improve on my last upload, which ends up taking me longer to get the next one out, I call this productive procrastination.

Currently, the videos take around 3-4 weeks from start to finish, however often I have client, freelance, admin and other work in between so this can stretch out. One reason for me coming onto Patreon was to allow me to cut down these side projects and fully commit to YouTube. That's not to say I value the side projects any less, but it's clear to me that the YouTube videos provide a level of value to a number of people I could never have imagined.

I sometimes bin videos too that just aren't working for me. This is a painful process as I can have invested some time into the project, but if I'm not happy with the quality, the video's not going up. I prize quality over quantity which I hope is clear on the channel.

2. Voting for an Artist

You can vote for an artist you'd wish for me to cover here. This keeps a running, ranked tally, allowing me to view at a glance who you'd guys like to see.

3. Contact

I don't use social media, so would prefer if you would contact me on:

1. Patreon. Over here is perfectly fine.
2. Email form on my website, this is the fastest way.
3. Discord, did I mention our Discord channel?

EXTRA:

A BIG NOTE: This is a vast experiment I am undergoing in public, so if there are any new features, products, tiers, or anything you would like to see implemented, feel free to send them my way. I'm only one person so a big part of my channel is a focus on collaboration with the audience and embracing our community. Many of the greatest ideas I have implemented have come from viewer recommendations. Which includes the encouragement to pursue creating tutorials after I uploaded my first on J Dilla. I owe you guys more than you'll ever know.

TWO EXTRA THINGS: I created a Beats by Vanity TV Discord chat for music producers, artists and creatives so that we could have a home outside of YouTube, in where I could interact with everyone and vice versa as well as each other. It's gone way better than I expected, with new members joining almost daily, join the growing community here.

The second thing is my email newsletter. I take a pretty minimal approach with this, you'll only receive an email every few months when there's a new tutorial to check out. YouTube often fails to notify Subscribers, so the newsletter is back up to ensure you can keep up to date with my content. The service that I use allows you to see my past issues too, so if I'd sent spam, or was dishonest about the content I do send out, you'd see.

Sign up or read past issues here.

Thank you for taking the time to read what I have to say and considering becoming a Patron!

Wishing you all the best,

Matthew.
