I’m Maurice Broaddus. You might know me from my short story work, nearly 100 stories having appeared in such places as Lightspeed Magazine, Weird Tales, Apex Magazine, Asimov’s, Cemetery Dance, Black Static, and many more (some of the stories collected in The Voices of Martyrs). You might know me from my urban fantasy trilogy, The Knights of Breton Court or the (upcoming) middle grade detective novel series, The Usual Suspects. I’ve also written novellas, such as Buffalo Soldier, I Can Transform You, and Orgy of Souls. I have co-edited the anthologies Dark Faith, Dark Faith: Invocations, and Streets of Shadows, as well as Nightmare Magazine’s special issue People of Colo(u)r Destroy Horror.

I also co-authored the play Finding Home: Indiana at 200. Dipping into the gaming world, my work includes writing for the Marvel Super-Heroes, Leverage, and Firefly role-playing games as well as working as a consultant on Watch Dogs 2.

So I write. A lot. I am also quite active in the community. My passions have always included social justice, economic equity, and racial reconciliation, which is why I work part-time at The Oaks Academy as a middle grade Logic teacher, do work for the Kheprw Institute, and work alongside The Learning Tree. Most of my work centers around the 46208 zip code (one of the “worst” zip codes in the country). We specialize in Asset Based Community Development, finding the gifts and talents within the community and networking them to improve the quality of the community. We celebrate the abundance in our neighborhoods. I am like an “invited outsider,” but using art to do community organizing and mentoring has always been close to my heart. Income-wise however, it’s like my life is that of a freelance community organizer. I love my life and my work. I recently told someone that if I hit the lottery, my schedule/life wouldn’t look much different than it is now.

Here’s the issue: I need help to be community-supported.

The big issue for me, as essentially a freelancer, is health insurance. For a family of four it’s an issue. Piecing together annual income from grassroots organizations is often … tricky. But the work is important and close to my heart. A base support of consistent supplemental income would allow me the breathing room to continue to serve the community.

I love the idea of patronage, community support of art creation. I think of it like being a missionary, being sponsored by the community so that I am free to work alongside these groups without tapping their resources. So what you are going to get from supporting this Patreon is stories. You will be allowing me to create more stories, about and within the neighborhood. Backers will receive digital copies of all of the work made possible by this Patreon and if I stay above my goal, there will be an additional monthly Q&A thing (nothing big, 3-5 minute videos). Writing is what I do. Writing is what I will keep doing. And if I can use writing to bless a community, I want to (and will!) do so.

Thank you so much for supporting me on this journey!
