It started out as a hypothetical conversation with my folks - "Would you want to go cruising again...with the kids?" We'd already circumnavigated on board Exit Only, a Privilege 39 catamaran. My parents and I completed the last leg in 2006, then the boat sat in storage for the following decade. Now we were discussing a crew of six - Dad, Mom, me, Sarah (my wife), and our daughters Zoe (age 8) and Joss (age 5). It was a big question.

Mom and Dad are veteran sailors. They have owned a succession of boats over the years, including one I sailed on when I was six weeks old. Sarah crewed Exit Only from Australia to Gibraltar, so she knows the cruising equation well (Discomfort + Sacrifice = Adventure). What none of us knew was how adding children to the mix might shake things up.

We decided to go for it.

It took 3 years to get in the water. Dad and I completely refit Exit Only over seven months in the boatyard - new rigging, replaced the headliner, swapped engines, the works. We criss-crossed the country 4 times and left our jobs behind. An emergency surgery surprised us. Sarah and I sold our house. Bones broke and mended.

Upon moving aboard, it was immediately obvious that the rewards of cruising as a three-generation family far outweigh the sacrifices. Every day brings new opportunities to show our girls a world overflowing with diversity and wonder. Mom and Dad love being around their grandchildren and are excited to revisit cruising grounds we last saw 20 years ago (Pacific).

I get to relieve my Dad of responsibilities he shouldered when I was a teenager and in my mid-twenties. Even with all the sailing I've done, he knows much more about boats than I do. Fortunately, he's a good teacher and I love to learn. The engines haven't blown up yet.

So here we are - a family steering for blue water, laughter, and opportunities to get to know our world better. I hope our adventures inspire you to take one of your own.

Thanks,
Dito

Thank you so much! The fact that you enjoy our videos so much is mind blowing and makes us really happy...and somewhat concerned we will need to continually up the ante to maintain the quality you deserve. There's like a 87% chance Dito is going to have to BASE jump in a squirrel suit, just to keep the spark alive.
