About Medieval Heritage

My name is Janusz Michalew, I am a historian by profession and for the last three years I have been working on a website about the monuments of medieval and antiquity. It is available online at
The aim of is to popularize monuments and buildings from the old periods by descriptions, photos, plans and reconstructions. Unlike other portals, I deal not only with castles but also with churches, monasteries, secular buildings, bridges... in one word, all kinds of medieval monuments that have survived to our times. Currently, the site contains about 3500 monuments from Poland, Slovakia, Latvia, Estonia and Wales (Scottish and Czech monuments are waiting to be translated). Everyone is described, with photos, most have plans, old engravings, reconstructions. I also added a dictionary of architectural concepts to which all passwords from sites with monuments will be linked in the future. I think that the site will also help people planning holidays and trips. All monuments are placed on the google map, so finding places to visit is not a problem. At the posts, I also try to give practical information, for example whether it is possible to visit, in which state the monument has survived, etc.

Thanks to your patronage, the website will be able to develop, which means more countries with their architectural heritage as well as supplementing and updating existing ones on the site, as well as adding new photographs, plans and reconstructions. Funds are necessary for the purchase of literature, especially foreign, difficult to access in Poland, paying bills and of course to pay for servers on which medievalheritage run. The ability to buy equipment for everyday work is also important (e.g. in recent years I could buy a new hdd in place of a burnt disk with backups and a new keyboard in place of a dilapidated old one).
