Hi there! Thanks for stopping by.

My name is Megan DeJarnett, and I'm a composer, performer, improviser, and writer of musical (and music-adjacent) works for headphones, theaters, and concert halls. By trade, I'm a trumpeter, dancer/mover, and occasional pianist; artistically, I'm an avid believer in the power of a good story and an advocate for nontraditional performance and the presence of diverse stories in the arts. I create and realize music for collaborative projects and concert programs, for sexual assault survivors and people seeking to understand, for those looking to change their lives and those just looking for a good show.

When I say I write music for sexual assault survivors, I mean that literally. Since 2016, I've been creating and performing music that explores the effects of sexual assault and rape culture on victims and female bodies generally. This body of work, which I've named Letters from the Aftermath, includes works for ensembles of various instrumentations, including voice(s), harp, full orchestra, electronics, trumpet, mixed ensembles, and open scores. Each work within Letters can stand alone, but I've also forayed into the world of concert theater creation and curation. My first effort in this vein, face the mirror, premiered on March 3, 2019, and I'm already looking for ways to bring it to larger audiences across the United States.

Regardless of subject matter, I really love writing and performing concert music that challenges performers to expand their technical abilities and present music in both traditional and nontraditional ways that mesh well with the story at hand. Whether this means writing a piece around a fictional board game, arming two vocalists with megaphones and a large space, or tapping into approachable extended techniques so a high school wind ensemble can do their best dragon imitations, I endeavor to make musical and programmatic choices that lend themselves to the sound world and characters I craft in each piece. Ultimately, my goal is to create captivating, accessible music that performers and audiences enjoy.

As a performer, I really enjoy improvising in not-strictly-jazz contexts. That's still a growing part of my art, and I'm excited to keep working with it and coaxing it out into the world. I'm used to primarily speaking as a composer, but as my performer side becomes more present, it's increasingly clear to me that I'm pursuing and making the same music on both sides of the table, whether I'm the one putting notes on the page or not.

I'm starting this Patreon so I can expand my creative horizons and connect more closely with my audience. I want to do more with my art! I want to continue collaborating with ensembles and performers to craft new works. I want to work on long-term projects with performers and dancers and theater artists. I want to begin making site-specific works. I want to put myself in a position to partake in opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach. And most importantly, I want to make sure I stay in music, despite the day jobs that will be a significant part of my early career.

It's not going to be easy, friends, but with your help, I think it's possible. I love what I do, and that dedication isn't going to change. But it isn't always easy to do what I do, both in the musical responsibility and the emotional weight of my subject matter. With your support—of as little as $1 a month!—I can continue my creative journey in a way that's healthy and enthralling for me. I'm looking forward to having you on board!
