Megan Devine is creating a Grief Revolution

Hello Friends!

tl;dr: I'm Megan Devine, and I want *you* to see more videos, animations, comics and other amazing stuff on how to help a grieving friend, and how to help yourself survive whatever loss has erupted in your life. Become a patron of the Grief Revolution today... just head over to the sidebar and choose your level of support.

And now, in long form:

Amazing things have been happening inside our Grief Revolution. We’ve started thousands of new conversations on the reality of grief, and what it really takes to support the people we love. You’ve all been instrumental in spreading the word about the book, and you've encouraged others to claim their right to grieve.

I’ve done a lot of work too – talking endlessly about grief online, on tv, and on the radio. I’ve fought hard for our community, educating others about the reality of grief, and why it matters. So many beautiful things have happened, and we’re just getting started.

And that brings me to our next phase of the Grief Revolution.

I’ve been wanting to do so many things for you, for all of us, over the last several years. That to-do list has reached epic proportions. I mean, for real - I’ve had “do podcast” on my to-do list for five years now. FIVE YEARS. As a mostly one-person-show, trying to do everything on my own means that 98% of that list doesn’t get done. Also on my to-do list: create videos on big grief topics, do a video q&a series, create a syndicated grief column, make comics to help people really understand what it’s like to be a grieving person in this culture, produce a tv show skewering platitudes (and show what to say instead), and on and on.

I HAVE PLANS.

And I can’t watch all these plans just sit there, not happening, just because I’m not super-human enough to make them all happen on my own. That means I have to ask for help, which is not always my favorite thing.

We need new ways to talk about grief. Look, things are changing. They are. It might not seem like it, but the grief landscape is light-years better than it was 9 years ago. It’s better, but it’s not good enough yet. I can get tricked into thinking it’s better, but then I talk to a new grieving person, or I overhear someone giving unsolicited advice or accidentally-on-purpose shaming someone who isn’t beaming and grateful and happy, and I know we have a long way to go to make this world better, kinder, and more skilled when it comes to grief.

That’s why I’ve finally pulled together all my resources AND my existing support team to launch our Patreon page. Patreon is a really cool platform that lets you support the people and causes you care about by pledging a certain amount for each item that gets created – things like q&a videos, animations, and podcast episodes. The money we all raise together goes to buy things like video equipment (so I can make you better videos than my old phone can manage), or better lights and microphones. But the thing I’m REALLY excited about is that, with your support, we can hire the people who will really help move our revolution forward: artists, tech people, and researchers.

Patreon is for people who want to help sustain my ability to make content that changes the way we come to grief by paying a set amount of money each time I create something new.

For an overview of how Patreon works, there’s a great primer HERE that explains everything.

As a patron, you'll see all of my new creations first! Before anyone else! And you'll get access to the fb HQ of the Grief Revolution and a growing community of people who know that grief is not a problem to be solved, but an experience to be carried.

You can join the Grief Revolution Patreon team in a few different ways. More details on each level in the sidebar, but here’s the gist: You’ll choose a patronage level. Let’s say you choose the $3 per item level. That means that each time I release something, like a Q&A video, or a new animation, you’ll pay $3 (Patreon bills monthly). You can set a spending cap, so even if I release 25 new videos in one month, you won’t ever pay more than the monthly cap you’ve set. Realistically speaking, it’s unlikely I’d make more than 4 new things per month, but you never know.

What will we do with the funds we raise together?

Our first goals in the Grief Revolution include upgrading the equipment I use to make video and audio segments. Once we’ve reached 100 patrons, I’ll upgrade to a new camera and mic system (which means I can make more videos, of better quality). Our second goal is to reach 175 patrons, which will let us hire a post-production video assistant. The big bottleneck in creating content is that I don’t know how to edit videos or audio, and I don’t have time to learn. Reaching that funding goal means I can hire someone who knows what they’re doing, and that means… more videos, of better quality, much more frequently.

Once we’ve got those foundations covered, we’ll start working towards hiring artists - illustrators, animators, and others – to help create the content that will educate, support, and acknowledge the realities of grief. And tbh, people pay the most attention when there are pictures involved…. So I cannot WAIT to get to our community level of 300 patrons so we can employ and support those artists.

Remember that amazing how to help a grieving friend at the holidays comic? Artist Brittany Bilyeu is ready to join our family as the official Grief Revolution Illustrator, creating comics to help spread the word. We just need to grow our Patreon Family so we can pay her for her gorgeous, powerful work. And our very first Patreon item-of-awesome is an animated short on why acknowledgment is the best medicine we have. It’s created by Astha Shrestha. Animations are expensive to produce, which is one more reason your support is so important.

More support means more creative, interesting ways to deliver the grief revolution to the world. And not just “the world” – we’re making helpful, poignant, snarky, cool videos, animations, illustrations and comics FOR YOU. Because I want you to feel like someone has your back. I want you to have the resources you need to feel acknowledged inside your own grief. And I want you to have resources to hand off to well-meaning friends and family, so that I can educate others for you: let me do that emotional labor, let me tell people why what they’re saying isn’t helping. I want to do that for you. And if you’re a support person, I want to give you all the tools you need to be the most amazing, most skilled, most awkwardly compassionate person you can be.

This cultural revolution stuff isn’t easy. I’m good, but I can’t do it alone. It’s going to take all of us. Speaking the truth about grief. Speaking the truth about love. About how hard it is to be here sometimes. About what it really means to love each other well. Want to be part of the Grief Revolution? Educate and advocate when you’re able, seek out kindness for yourself and offer it to others, and if you’re willing to be part of the family, come on over and join our Patreon community. It’s the headquarters of the Grief Revolution.

By the way, Patrons who join the Grief Revolution by August 13th will have their names inscribed on the Founders’ Wall for all to see. We’ll be running this Grief Revolution until everyone, forever and all time, knows how to show up, listen, and respond to grief with the care it deserves. So that means your names will go down in grief-history, and be spoken of for a long time to come. Want to be recorded for posterity? Join as a Patron by August 13th.

Whenever you join us, we'll all be glad to welcome you to the Grief Revolution. Head on over to the sidebar and choose your level of support.

Thanks, and I'll see you soon.

Super Secret Instagram Account
$10 or more per creation
How can I thank you for being so incredibly supportive of my work, of our work, and the Grief Revolution? Why, by creating a secret Instagram account where you can watch out-takes from my videos, behind-the-scenes video clips, personal stories, general goofiness that doesn’t make it to my social media feeds (or even the official Patreon space), links to the ever-evolving grief soundtrack, and me singing songs on video because, yes, I am that dorky.

Plus: all the benefits of tiers one & two.

Shoutout & Your Name in Video Credits
$40 or more per creation
You, dear patron, are a fierce member of the Grief Revolution! In addition to the knowledge that you are seriously helping to further our efforts in big, tangible, make-things-happen ways, I will thank you personally in one of my upcoming videos and your name will be included in the credits for each video.

Plus all the benefits of the previous tiers, and my unchanging love, admiration, and gratitude.

Goals
155 of 175 patrons
When we reach 175 members in the Grief Revolution, we get to hire a professional video editor! This means better videos, delivered much more quickly to all of your collective eyes, ears, hearts, and minds.
