I’m Melissa, fantasy author of the Iyarri Chronicles and herbal alchemist behind NightBlooming. I dream big, and work hard. When I first started this journey, I had no idea that publishing my novels could actually happen, or that NightBlooming would last a year, much less be successful a decade later.

At times people ask if writing is my job, or if NightBlooming is my job, but no, neither of these things is my "real” job; I have a 40+ hours a week full-time career. If you roll my day job, writing, and running NightBlooming all together, my typical work week is often over 100 hours (there are 160 hours in a week). I am at the limits of my capabilities. Every day, every weekend, is a calculated to-do list and falling behind creates a snowball effect that is nearly impossible to recover from.

Nightblooming and writing, while successful, don’t make me nearly enough to live on. The income from these businesses are small and inconsistent, and the expenses are large enough that I lean on my full-time job to live. And I don’t mean a “having miniature giraffes” version of living; I mean the “covering my half of the mortgage and bills and paying for insurance” kind.

My dream has always been to dedicate myself fully to this adventure, but I thought writing The Iyarri Chronicles and making NightBlooming a full-time endeavor was impossible. Lately I've come to realize that it might be more possible than I think.

To make it happen, though, I'm going to need help of Patrons.

Historically, art patronage was the gift of support and thus, survival. Royalty and the aristocracy retained artists who created in return for food, lodging, and much-needed supplies.

Today, however, support for art doesn’t have to come from some elite group, but from everyday people giving a little bit here and there.

This is me asking you to be my Patron, to support my art with a few dollars a month, so that I can produce the things you love. Think of it as buying me a cuppa and having a chat with you once every few weeks <3

Consistent support from Patrons would allow me to be more nimble and move faster in my business. It would help me avoid using NightBlooming to pay for writing, or using my day job to pay for big NightBlooming expenses. It would give me a little piece of mind and the space to be creative rather than focusing on keeping all these plates spinning.

When I first started to get serious about publishing I had a lot of misconceptions about the process.

I had delusions of sitting beside an artist while they crafted my cover. I always wondered why some covers didn't match the contents, and the answer is because in traditional publishing you, the author, are sent an email along the lines of "Here's your cover, see attached .jpg! Hope you like it." As an artistic, visual person who has a clear vision, it crushed me to be totally excluded from such a meaningful part of the process.

More revelations made me realize that traditional publishing was not the best match for me. In addition to being in control of the cover, a publisher can:
  • Change the title of the book
  • Make you edit on their timeline (which is something I can’t do due to time constraints)
  • Publish your first book and then decline to publish the rest, meaning that you’d have to let your series die or wait until you can get your rights back, which sometimes takes years

A traditional publisher pays the average first-time author an advance of about $5,000-8,000 for the entirety of their creative rights. This money has to be paid back before writers get royalties, meaning that for many authors, they only ever see money from that first advance. When you add in that most publishers lean very heavily on debut authors to do their own marketing, this route isn’t financially feasible for me.

By publishing independently, I am:
  • Retaining full creative control and intellectual rights to my work. That means the cover will match the contents of my book, that the titles I choose stay, and I am able to serve the story and my readers before anything else
  • Able to do tie-ins and tangential projects like make perfume blends to match the characters, an put out an Illustrated Iyarri book (it's in the Goals section!)
  • Working with professional editors, cover artists, and printers to create amazing, quality books
  • Still able to have my books distributed into bookstores and libraries as well as being sold online

However, paying for all of this, including the cost of printing all those books, comes out of my own pocket.

It's always a little entertaining to me (and by entertaining, I mean sweet and a little depressing) when people hear I run my own shop and write books. "Oh, how fun!" they say, as though I’m just able to print money with creativity. The reality is that it's an agonizing amount of work with a lot of monetary skin in the game. That I persist reveals just how deep my love for what I do is.

Last Year NightBlooming Expenses (abbreviated):
$570 Web costs (hosting, domains, email marketing services, etc.)
$1,800 Marketing (promoted listings, google shopping ads, promotional samples, etc.)
$3,700 Buying nightblooming.com from the person who owned it
$6,200 Printables (labels, instructional brochures, stickers, etc.)
$9,100 Etsy fees
$1,900 Transaction fees (credit card and PayPal processing)
$7,400 Shipping costs (which are now also subject to Etsy fees, meaning the fees portion will go up a lot next year)
$10,000 Materials (raw herbs, oils, essential oils, packaging materials, etc.)
$40,670 Total

I turn a profit, but a lot of that profit goes right back into NightBlooming to try to grow it. Anything leftover goes towards publishing.

Indie Publishing Expenses for Heaven’s Silhouette, the first book in the Iyarri Chronicles (abbreviated):
$2,500 Publishing Consulting (Including project management, marketing support, and ISBNs)
$750 Developmental Editing
$2,275 Line Editing
$1,600 Proofreading
$4,000 Book Design
$475 ebook Creation and Distribution
$625 Distribution into bookstores and online retailers
$9,635 Printing 1,500 Hardcovers
$1,200 Additional marketing promotions (ad campaigns, blog tours, and more)
$23,060 Total

In return for the support I need to make this dream happen, I'm really excited to provide monthly updates for just my patrons, including Q&A sessions and in-depth blog posts about my creative process.

At higher levels, Patrons will receive exclusive digital art content, discounts at NightBlooming, and a once a month sketch or piece of art tied to my worldbuilding.

The Downloadable Art Pack included in the Aldaria Noble pack (pictured above) and above includes:
  • Heavens Silhouette wallpapers for desktop computers (1920x1080), tablets (1366x768) and phones (367x690)
  • Four printable bookmarks inspired by Heavens Silhouette and The Iyarri Chronicles.

Patrons will receive a Patrons-only special edition Heaven's Silhouette that contains the first chapter of Mourning's Dawn: Iyarri Chronicles Book 2.

The highest-tier Patrons can receive not only all the digital content from the lower tiers, but physical rewards as well, including beautiful metal feather bookmark, a signed and numbered hardcover copy of Heaven's Silhouette (that contains first chapter of book 2, Mourning's Dawn), and a custom-penned 3,000 word story or character background just for you!

Becoming a Patron is a very easy process.

  1. Decide how much you can comfortably pledge per month and select one of the reward tiers.
  2. You'll have the option to pledge extra if you want to give more, but aren't interested in any of the higher rewards (or are just feeling very generous).
  3. It will ask you to choose a payment method and process the first month’s gift.
  4. That's it! You'll instantly have access to your digital rewards (here's where and how) and when receive the physical gifts when available. You'll be able to check in monthly to see all the new content unlocked at your tier.
Thank you for your support.

Q: What is the best way to lend support? Ongoing support is the most valuable thing you can give to me! Signing up for the tier with the highest rewards you want to access (say for a hardcover book!) and then changing your tier to the $2 or $7 tier for ongoing support helps the most, while simultaneously giving you ongoing access to important developments and exclusive discounts at NightBlooming. Changing your tier is super-easy! Here's how.

Q: When will I be charged? My page is set up to charge upfront. Existing patrons are always charged on the 1st of the month, Pacific Standard Time. Increased pledges and new patrons are charged immediately. Paused, cancelled and lowered pledges take effect the next month. Patreon explains it better.

Q: I just became a patron, what now? If your payment was successful, you will have instant access to my feed with patron-only posts.

Q: How do I access my rewards? Digital rewards will be accessed from within Patreon digital rewards (here's where and how). Physical rewards will be mailed to you as soon as possible and I will DM you with tracking information. Please note that if you pre-ordered a digital book or a physical book that it will not be sent to you until its official release.

Q: What’s the best way to contact you? Via Patron Message or email (email preferred).

Q: Can I share your posts & rewards with friends? Retweets and shares of my page or public posts are so helpful, as they often bring in new patrons! You’re also free to gift or give away your physical books. However, Patron-only content and monthly rewards are a Big No, for obvious reasons. If your friends are interested in my work, please encourage them to become a patron too. For every milestone we reach, there are new community rewards & everybody wins.
