Before college, I had always wanted to be a writer, so it made sense that I should go into Journalism. I took three years of newspaper class in high school. Then, I attended CMU and earned my degree in Journalism. After graduation, I received a lot of rejection to my job applications but was offered a job with an Internet Service Provider in Howell as a web developer.

Since that point, I've been on a far different track than I could have imagined as a web developer, user support technician, QA specialist, UX researcher, and business writer. I have had a lot of success with these roles. So, why would I get back into news publishing, and why take on a project on my own? I've asked myself that many times.

I first started to get a taste of news publishing a few years ago when I started the Shepherd Today page on Facebook. Later, I changed the name to The Shepherd Journal, and approached it as if it was an online newspaper. In 2015, when a fire destroyed the building for The Shepherd Argus, I felt like it was important to continue the tradition of publishing news and information from around the Shepherd community.

I’ve also watched as newspaper staffs have been shrinking and, in many cases, newspapers have been disappearing because of financial issues. This is a trend I wanted to reverse by launching a different kind of news website.

The purpose of The Mid Michigan Journal will be to keep its readers informed and to capture central Michigan residents’ stories. This will be accomplished through partnerships with local businesses and organizations, and crowdsourcing. But, the MMJ will still hold itself to the same standards that are expected from the most traditional newspapers.
