I’m an artist and an author. Welcome to my Patreon page. I make picture books, graphic novels, and works of fine art. I also teach workshops and classes, mentor emerging artists and share my stories with children. Connecting with fans and supporters means so much to me. This is why I’m happy to join Patreon.

Patreon allows me to share comics, works-in-progress, new ideas, tutorials and other art that isn't seen by an audience, and in return you contribute to making it all possible.

To find out more about my work and how you can support it, watch the video above or continue reading!

Thanks for visiting.

After twenty years of freelancing in various fields, teaching and directing at close-knit community art studios, I refocused my career goals in 2015 and soon broke into the children’s book industry.

For a largely self-taught artist, this accomplishment was the best possible dream come true. Making art and telling stories for any sort of income was always a goal, but after years of highs and lows, economic downturns and bursting bubbles, I finally succeeded in a way that has the potential for sustainability and more importantly, impact.

My debut picture book MARIGOLD BAKES A CAKE was published by Philomel, a Penguin imprint, in 2017 followed by MARIGOLD FINDS THE MAGIC WORDS, in 2019. I have also illustrated the WARREN AND DRAGON chapter book series for Viking Publishing and YOU MADE ME A DAD! for HarperCollins.

I'm not only talking about fictional tales of dragons, dads and fickle felines; I’m passionate to share my personal experience as an author and artist with those who want to learn.

I made a lot of mistakes but did plenty of other things right. What motivates me beyond creating good work is sharing what I have learned with a wider audience of people of all ages.

Art making, storytelling and creative thought belong to everyone and deserve a place in any curriculum. They foster conversation with others despite our differences and offer solutions to the variety of challenges we face today.

Connection is necessary.

New voices are necessary.

Education and support are necessary.

As a self-taught professional, I recognize the financial constraints that keeps some talented voices from taking part in innovative learning environments and our collective conversation. I want to do my part to change that. I want to bring my story to communities with limited access to the arts in hopes that some individuals may find encouragement and support.

However, in order to write, draw and teach to the best of my ability, I need more time.

I’ve provided for a family of four as a freelance artist and teacher now for well over a decade and have earned my stripes as a professional. I have paid mortgages, bought health insurance and braces and generally made ends meet. While standing on the precipice of a career that can have a great and long-lasting impact, it’s important that I produce my best work.

The gig economy, as it relates to art, storytelling and teaching doesn't necessarily foster going the extra mile in order to get something right. Furthermore, creative work is often undervalued, and the gap between a young artist or writer who is happy to make a buck and an established professional who can provide for a family and make a positive global impact is wide and full of those who would exploit a dedicated and driven emerging voice.

It's a common misconception that once you get a book deal, you have it made. In reality, it takes a lot of extra effort to stay relevant and solidify your place in the industry. Creating and developing new work and sharing it with a wider audience while traveling to conferences, visiting schools and libraries, and attending book festivals requires hours of work that often isn’t paid.

When a particular artist’s work inspires you, Patreon makes it possible to support that work directly without having to pay an industry-inflated price of admission. It also enables artists to properly judge the value of what they produce.

With the patronage of a few hundred community members and fans, contributing as little as $5/month, I will be able to fully realize my vision for relating to my community, both locally and globally as an artist. Here are the goals I’m setting out to accomplish:

  • Develop a series of exclusive web comics for my community of fans.
  • Incubate new book projects and share the process with my patrons.
  • Establish and share a range of free teaching tools with children, families and individuals who are eager to grow creatively.
  • Offer workshops and author visits to libraries and schools in underserved neighborhoods.
  • Curate exhibits and events that help to develop new voices and provide a bridge to established creative industries.
As a patron, you’ll join me in the studio through video content, access to works-in-progress, and exclusive Q&A sessions. Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to receive original art, prints, sketches and other gifts.

With a baseline of support, I can stay the course creatively. And as I spend more time teaching and launching new projects, I can engage with you, the community that finds my work meaningful and and valuable.
