I'm Mike Sheriff, and I'd like to write more short stories for sci-fi lovers like you.

If you're not familiar with my work, I write accessible science fiction for readers with curious minds and a taste for tension.

Over the past 18 months, I've released five books in the The Extinction Odyssey series. I’m currently working on the sixth and final instalment, Survival Aptitude Test: Death. Once it's done, I'll be diving into a new six-book prequel series called The Extinction Origin.

Collectively, my work has so far garnered over 250 reviews on Amazon, the vast majority of which are 5-star. Here's a wee smattering:

I've also amassed a following of more than 5,000 fans in my Readers' Posse. (With a last name like Sheriff, what else could I call it?) They're fellow lovers of sci-fi who joined my author newsletter from back-of-the-book sign-ups and other promotions.

Which brings me back to the reason for this campaign...

Why sci-fi shorts?

Because they're fun to write. Because they're fast to write. And because they can be just as pulse-pounding or thought-provoking as full-length novels.

But shorts are a tough sell, whether it's to magazines or as standalones on retail sites like Amazon. It's a shame because they're a perfect fit for today's time-crunched readers

To date, I've published three shorts under my LIGHTBURST imprint. My Readers' Posse tells me they'd love to read more—and I'd love to oblige them. Unfortunately, there's a huge opportunity cost to pay.

Writing is my full-time gig. It's how I earn my living, and that means I have to devote my time to projects offering the greatest financial return. It may sound cold and crass, but that means novels.

But you could help change that heartless calculation.

Patreon means patronage—a method of supporting creative works that's been around since antiquity. Galileo and Beethoven are two notable creators who benefited from the generosity of patrons.

I'm not suggesting my shorts are on par with discovering Jupiter's largest moons or composing the 5th Symphony, but you never know what creative output owes a nod to the kindness of others.

Take The Wreck of the Gerald Fitz-Edmund for example. I've been sitting on the story for over six months. It follows the crew of a Kuiper-Class Cargo Ship as they return to Earth with a load of platinum ore mined from a distant asteroid. Needless to say, complications ensue.

I know the story. You may, too—or think you do—if you know the fate of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald. I could finish writing it in four weeks. I've even got the cover ready to go:

What I don't have is time for the project.

My priority is finishing the current novel and then diving into the first book of The Extinction Origin series, so I can keep putting food on the table. Wreck seems destined to remain on the back burner.

But what if Wreck—and the dozens more shorts currently languishing in mental limbo—could move onto the front burner?

That's where YOU can make the difference.

Your patronage will act like a bridge, making it possible for me to increase the time between novel releases. And more time between novel releases will mean I can channel more focus and more effort onto a bevy of entertaining short fiction.

To put it another way, your patronage will support creative work I otherwise couldn't afford to do. You'll be breathing life into stories like The Wreck of the Gerald Fitz-EdmundGuidance is InternalRiding the Light, and many more.

Which is all well and good for me, but you may be wondering...

Besides gaining the title Patron of the Arts and receiving a regular dose of pulse-pounding and thought-provoking sci-fi, you'll also be getting a hockey-sock of rewards for your generosity.

Patrons of every tier will receive THREE COMPLIMENTARY SHORTS
to road-test my work:

Assuming you like what you read and don't run for the hills, additional rewards will vary by tier and stretch goal. Here's a sample of what you can expect:

  • Exclusive access to blog posts
  • Early access to video content featuring the inside dope on how the sci-fi sausage is made
  • Digital downloads of each month's short
  • Draft chapters and story notes
  • Reasonably competent guitar playing (huh?)
  • Audiobook downloads of each month's short story
  • Monthly Q&A sessions
  • Funny accents and male-pattern baldness
  • Signed print compilations of up to twelve short stories
  • Quarterly, one-on-one Skype calls

I consider a short story to be 3,000 to 10,000 words, which is more than enough space to spin an entertaining yarn, and expect to deliver a new short every month once we hit Goal #2.

I also plan to make the shorts exclusive to Patreon for three months, after which they'll be available on Amazon, iTunes, and other retailers.

Thanks for taking the time to check out my campaign. Please take a moment longer to check out the various pledge tiers and stretch goals I've set up.

If you see value in my creative work and find a level of ongoing support you're comfortable providing, I’d love to welcome you into my Patreon Posse.

If a financial pledge is beyond your reach at this time, I'd be hugely grateful if you could help spread the word on my behalf.

All my best,
Mike

Goal #1: I'm a Wreck!

THE WRECK OF THE GERALD FITZ-EDMUND officially comes off the back burner! I'll deliver the short roughly four weeks after we hit this target.

I'll also STRIVE* to write a 3,000 to 10,000-word short every other month and deliver it as a PDF to all current Patrons for as long as we maintain this goal's targeted earnings.

*STRIVE means I'll do my best. Other writing tasks (i.e. novels) may take priority.
