About Miya Turnbull

If you love my artwork, please help support my artistic practise so I can continue to build a body of work, full-time. I spend my days making masks, doing photoshoots, making and editing video, and writing proposals for exhibits and different opportunities. I don't often sell a lot of my work so the masks can be exhibited together as a collective body, therefore it's hard to make a living doing what I'm doing, aside from the occasional (and wonderful) grants that I receive. Please visit my website at: www.miyaturnbull.com and Instagram: @miyamask to see more of my weird artwork.

I also love working with natural dyes, sewing and silkscreening my designs onto napkins, tea towels, shirts, patches, cards, aprons, etc. I love to keep busy and am always making something. I love painting and making animations, when time permits. See some of my designs in my online shop at: www.thatcat.ca. I am more focused on my masks right now, so everything in this shop is basically limited editions, and what I have left in stock.

Everyone who joins my Patreon, will receive a thank you gift as well as Patron-only posts. These might include 'behind-the-scenes' content to do with my studio and practise, or early access content. You will be able to choose what kind of gift you receive- it could be one of my Origami Self-Portrait- already folded or DIY if you prefer- or it could be one of my cards or textiles with my design silkscreened on it. I will continue to send out rewards at unspecified times for continuing your support.

I am new to this, so with time, I can figure out more rewards as well- I can offer mask making advice or working with paper-mâché, for example. And of course, the more you donate each month, the higher or more personal the perks will be. Please feel free to make requests!

Bio:
Miya Turnbull is a Canadian multi-disciplinary visual artist. Primarily a mask maker, she also works in many mediums such as painting, photography, screen printing, textiles, video, animation and projection. She is of mixed Japanese-Canadian ancestry and grew up on a farm in Alberta and graduated from the University of Lethbridge with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2000, before moving to Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Miya (pronounced Mee-yah) has presented her masks, photo and video work across Canada and internationally. In 2019, she exhibited over 60 masks at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre Gallery (Toronto) after a 10 year hiatus away from her practise when her daughter was born. She was part of Photophobia Film Festival (Hamilton), as well as exhibits at the Craig Gallery (Dartmouth) and the Corridor Gallery (Halifax) in 2020.

So far in 2021, she has exhibited with Acadia University Art Gallery (NS), the Barrett Art Center (US), the House of Smalls (UK), M.A.D.S Art Gallery (Italy), The Ice House Gallery (NS) and later this summer: Gallery 101 (Ottawa). Her masks were presented at the Royal Anthropological Institute Film Festival (UK) by Social Anthropologist Nataliya Tchermalykh (University of Geneva). She was the featured and cover artist in Art Reveal, an online magazine based out of Germany.

Artist Statement:
Over and over, I create new variations of my ‘self’ through masks, sculptures, photos and video. My self-portraits are often altered in various manners- the slant of my eyes for example, or sometimes extreme manipulations resulting in distorted representations. I am drawing from the traditional uses of masks worn for disguise, transformation and protection, and as symbols for persona, self-image and identity. By keeping my image a constant, I am able to experiment with multiple iterations and further explore my heritage, experiences, perceptions and inner world, making these visible, tangible and wearable.
