My name is Kathleen Heuer, and I host the Marketing Music Education podcast, encouraging music educators & boosters to increase the “relentlessly positive” perception of their programs to help protect against budget cuts and reach more students.

While I realized long ago that I don't have the talents nor skills to be a music educator, I have studied marketing, and I can think of no better way to apply those skills than to let people know how important music education is, and to help music programs get the word out about the work they're doing in their own schools and communities.

On the podcast, I bring on guests who can talk about the ways that they market their own music education programs, or guests who are using tools and tactics that music ed programs can copy.

Throughout the two years that I've hosted the podcast, I've discovered that music educators frequently deal with  burnout. Part of strengthening music education, then, involves selling music educators on the idea that it's not only nice, but NECESSARY for them to incorporate self-care into their daily and weekly routines.

I also cover newsworthy topics in music education, like  the firing of Jon Waters at Ohio State University in 2014, or  the replacement of NAfME's Michael Butera in 2016.

The podcast began as a labor of love. I am paying out of pocket for the privilege, however. Hosting fees run about $100 a year for the website, and $15 per month for audio hosting. I often travel to music education events to get interviews, and that cost adds up quickly.

Using Patreon, I'd like to be able to cover some of these costs. Stretch goals include interviewing guests at events like the NAMM Show in Anaheim, hiring an editor and/or intern, and a website redesign (including pulling past episodes over from where they currently live at kathleenheuer.com).
