About Modern Loss

Since 2013, Modern Loss has worked tirelessly to eradicate the stigma surrounding honest talk on grief and the long arc of loss, and to focus on the enormous resilience within us all.

We offer a little attitude and zero platitude. And we do it with candor, wit and a heavy dose of levity through the following programs and products, which we are asking you to join us in continuing and growing so that nobody *ever* feels isolated in their loss again:

Our website: Let us lead with the fact that we have never once charged anything for access to our publication. And for a teeny tiny website, we have tirelessly published hundreds upon hundreds of literary nonfiction personal essays narrowly focused around one aspect of loss, all of which are handled with the highest quality editorial process and receive the respect such a story deserves. We also offer practical advice in the forms of The Estate Department, our unofficial legal advice column; Mourning, Noon and Night, which includes trends (such as memorial tattoos/jewelry) experiences (travel) and creative ideas for dealing with the workplace/trigger days/etc.; Ask ML, our witty, catch-all advice column for everyday quandaries (such as family dynamics, friendship issues, holidays, digital life), a wealth of How Tos (parenting through loss, supporting teens, writing your story, becoming a better source of support), and our popular Grief Bacon series about the unexpected and wacky effects of grief on the body and mind. We also run pieces in response to current events and pop culture (i.e., celebrity deaths, shows that deal with loss). This work is an enormous amount of loving labor and we need your help in keeping up with the hundreds of submissions awaiting our review, preparing thoughtful artwork, handling the huge CMS workload, keeping our server/tech team humming along, and getting more contributing editorial help.

Our book: Modern Loss: Candid Conversation About Grief. Beginners Welcome (HarperWave, 2018), which book debuted as a #1 new release on Amazon, was a New York Times Book Review new and notable pick (and also received a full-page excerpt in the Sunday Review section) and was recently named one of the best books on grief for young adults by The Cut. It's described as a "support group in book format," and we'd like to give you more of these.

Our holiday gift swaps:
We have matched more than 1,000 total strangers across the United States and Canada over the last three years of annual gift swaps for Mother's Day, Father's Day and the winter holiday season. Sadly, there are no algorithms that equal the empathic abilities of a human person thoughtfully matching people based on age and type of loss, and this takes a lot of time. Help us to keep pairing people who will keep their connection going well past this event.

Our social media platforms: It takes hours of weekly work to manage a public and closed Facebook group, actively engage followers on Instagram and keep the conversation going on Twitter. Visit any one of them and we promise you'll never be bored, you'll often be inspired, and you'll always feel seen.

Our Newsletter: With your support, our monthly newsletter could easily become more frequent, per the request of our readers, and expanded to include interviews with compelling public and private figures.

Our live events: We have produced and hosted numerous Modern Loss live events around the country – including Austin (BookPeople), Los Angeles (Book Soup), San Francisco (Book Passage), Jersey City (WORD), New York (JCC Manhattan, Refinery29, Housing Works), and the Berkshires (The Mount – Edith Wharton’s summer estate). These let-it-all-hang-out evenings spark instant comfort and community stemming from honest, intimate and even hilarious stories on the underbelly of loss (you know, the stuff people don't really like to talk about in "polite" company!) have received both critical and audience acclaim. But they also take dozens of hours to prepare, including researching and forming the lineup, personally coaching each performer, marketing and ticketing, and of course, all those fun production deliverables.
