About Museum of Portable Sound

The Museum of Portable Sound (or 'MOPS') is dedicated to the collection, preservation, and exhibition of sounds as objects of culture – we help people listen!

I'm the museum's Director and Chief Curator, John Kannenberg, and I meet one-on-one with all of our museum's visitors.

When someone wants to visit, they contact us via our website, We arrange a time and place to meet, I show up and bring the museum: a mobile phone, a map, and a printed Gallery Guide book. Visits last as long as the visitor wants – we've had 8 hour visits!

Admission is FREE.

I'd love to keep admission free for all. That's one of the areas where Patreon can hopefully help.

We also publish daily content at our Facebook, Twitter Instagram, and YouTube accounts, all of which have seen audience growth over the past 4 years. We've got lots of fans, and we totally appreciate them!

But we can't continue to grow without financial support.

We've got ideas for lots of real-world projects we would love to do that require funding! We want to do things like:

Produce a podcast, 'Sound Beyond Music' – a monthly radio show about sounds as cultural objects;

Translate our Gallery Guide – we'd love to be able to share our museum with more than just English speakers!;

Publish 'Mixtapes of Remembered Sounds' – a book the size of an audio cassette, packaged inside a plastic cassette tape case;

Release a 7" vinyl single of the sound inside the world's oldest record shop;

If these projects sound appealing and worthwhile to you, we'd really appreciate your patronage, at any level! Thanks for checking us out!
