Musical Ecologies

is creating a series of six concerts and conversations

per month

Since we began the Musical Ecologies Series in 2012, we have hosted over 50 events at the Old Stone House in Park Slope, Brooklyn featuring an extraordinary range of visionary artists.

Conceived as equal parts symposium and traditional concert series, the foundation of Musical Ecologies is conversation. From the beginning, each event has started with an extended, free-flowing exchange between the featured artist and myself, series curator Dan Joseph, many of which can be streamed from our audio archive page. It’s been a wonderful and enlightening experience to engage directly with artists and their creative process, and to then hear some of their newest work performed live. The intimate setting, in the Great Room of the Old Stone House, has provided the perfect atmosphere and acoustic space for this unique series, and as we look ahead to our seventh season, we are inviting you to become a supporter and stakeholder!

Musical Ecologies has thus far operated without a formal budget. We have always guaranteed a minimum honorarium to our artists, in addition to a generous split of the door income, and though many events are well attended, we have operated at a continual deficit. We are asking for your ongoing support at whatever level you can afford so that we can keep the music and conversation going, for next season and beyond!

In addition to artist honorarium, which we would like to increase, we have general operating expenses such as door staff, advertising, printing and promotional expenses that, while minimal, accumulate over the course of a full season. These are the primary costs that your contributions will help defray. Beyond that, we have ambitions to expand our outreach and further develop our media archives, which include audio, video, and photos. If, and when we build a large enough support network, we will begin to move forward on these expansions.

Musical Ecologies is, at its root, a community, a musical ecosystem of interdependent parts and systems. And as with any healthy ecosystem, it needs nourishment and balance. We want you to be part of that input! Join us!
