My Maternal Musings started out shortly after I found out I was pregnant with our first child (April 2018). I felt defensive immediately - like the whole world just wanted me to be entirely happy to be pregnant, and not real about the 'shit bits', like the constant vomiting, sore breasts, and identity crisis that was brewing as I realised I needed to transition from 100% career woman to "Mum".

One of the ways I found that I could cope with all of the changes I was experiencing was to document them in comic form. I studied art therapy back in 2014, and it had a huge impact on the way I approach my inner life: it allowed me to fuse my creativity and my emotions and depict in some sensory way what was really happening for me. My Maternal Musing comics became a way of processing, but also a way of making light of, what my pregnancy journey was like. It then evolved into a way to encourage others as they go through their own mothering journeys. My intention is that I'll continue with these drawings for at least the next five years, as I start and grow my family.

I genuinely believe that when we own our experiences with complete truth (engaging our vulnerability and authenticity) that they become powerful change agents within us, and within our communities. My hope is that these comics will help women to own the entirety of their maternal experiences without shame, and provide a laugh along the way.

Creating these drawings is something that I do in my spare time. It would mean so much for me to be paid for giving my creative gifts to the world, particularly as I move into the unpaid world of motherhood for a time. I'd like to be able to show my children that creative expression is a viable career option - that sharing what we hear in our hearts through the mediums that we cultivate skill in, is worth enough to the world to be able to live a good life on.

I hope that you will join me in this journey by becoming a subscriber.

Much love,

Anna
