Hello Denizens of the Internet, and welcome to my Patreon page.

First, I'd like to thank you for stopping by. The fact that you're here probably means that you've seen some of my work and like it enough to consider, even for a moment, supporting me in my effort to step beyond the land of hobbyist astrophotographer and evolve into a professional astrophotographer. It's sort of like pokemon, but without all the zubats.

That being said, for those of  you who haven't seen my work, perhaps it's best that I start there.

So who am I?
My name is Matthew Zietzke, and I am a wide-field astrophotographer. This is like being a landscape photographer, but I heavily specialize in taking my images at night. Some common wide-field astrophotography that you may have seen are star trail images, panoramas of the Milky Way, and time lapse videos.

What is Patreon?
Patreon is a new version of crowd funding for the content creator. Like Kickstarter, people like you pledge a certain amount of money to support projects that you like. But Patreon is a little bit different from Kickstarter because this isn't a lump sum pledge. Instead, with Patreon, my supporters - patrons, if you will - pledge a chosen amount of money for every time I create something new. And even better, when you pledge at a certain level, you will get rewarded as a thank you from me to you!

When will a Patron's pledge be donated?
I have structured my Patreon page to take donations for every time I create a photo set, which will generally be made out of a night's work of astrophotography. In some cases, depending on what it is that I will be shooting, I may combine nights, or I may separate a night into multiple sets, but for the most part, one night = one set, and no matter what happens I am not interested in gipping you. A set will always represent a substantial amount of time and effort I will have put into preparation, taking the shot, and post-processing.

Also, I create time lapse videos, which I will also take donations for once I feel that I've reached a sufficiently professional level of quality in creating these videos.

How many photos will be in a set?
Generally speaking, a set will contain 2-4 photos. I do expect that this number will increase as I become better at the art, and as I'm able to more fully dedicate myself to the craft with more supporters. This being said, astrophotography often requires the stacking of many exposures, with many images exceeding an hour's worth of exposure time, so it may not be possible at times to increase the number of images in a set.

How often will I be releasing content?
That depends. The short answer is that I'd like to start by putting out a new photo set once a month in the summer months.

While I'd love to be out there doing this all the time, there are a number of things limiting me from doing so: First and foremost is the weather. During the winter months, it's very rare that I am able to even see the stars, let alone take pictures of them. Even in the summer, it's not guaranteed that a location will be available or suitable for what I want to create next. It can also be the case that daily life gets in the way. As more people pledge, I will be able to dedicate more time and energy to the task of creating my images and time lapse videos.

Does this mean you have to pay to see my work?
No! Well, not all of it, anyways. I will release some images to the general public, but they will be watermarked and limited in quantity. Only patrons and those who go out under the stars with me will receive the full image sets.

What if I create more than you (or I) expect to?
If this ever happens, you're safe! Patreon allows you to set a monthly limit on how much you donate to content creators, myself included. So long as you set this limit and budget loosely around it, you won't have any problem. And if I don't create something in a given month, treat it as a great savings program! Set aside that money for accomplishing your own goals!

And if you can no longer afford your pledge, or my work isn't up to your expectations?
I'll certainly be sad to see you go for whatever reason you must withdraw your pledge, however, I absolutely understand. You can choose to stop your donations at any time, and I swear I won't hunt you down and beat you with a dull spoon.

In fact, if my work isn't up to your expectations, I do hope that you will leave me a comment with any criticisms or suggestions. I am constantly learning and looking to improve my craft, and I can't always do that without the helpful feedback of other people.

So what do these pledges really do for me?
First and foremost, the more you and others pledge, the more driven I am to create. Obviously I'll do this without being paid because I love astrophotography, but it means a lot to me when others like my work enough that they're willing to pay for me to make more. You've worked hard for your cash, and I aim to earn whatever you choose to donate.

For specific goals that I have in mind, check the left side of the page. While it lists dollars per image set or time lapse, I'm more interested in the total raised at any given time, as this will be my main fund for purchasing more equipment. If there is a dollar amount listed in the description, it is my true goal for that item unless enough people pledge that I feel comfortable fronting a purchase by dipping into some of my personal spending money.

About those rewards...
When you pledge at a certain level, I will grant you ongoing rewards as a special thank you. These reward levels can be found below.

While these may shift over time to better fit the direction my work is heading, I will not raise the price for a pledge level or remove a level without consulting with the community first. If such a case arises, I will always err on the side of giving more, not less. My patrons mean the world to me, because without your support, it's a whole lot harder to bring the stars down to you.

Woah, that was a dissertation!
For getting this far, I have one of my goals already fulfilled. For this, I promise that I will do my absolute best to earn your support, and to improve with every image I take.

Thank you,
Matthew Zietzke

Pick my brain!
With $10 pledged for every photo set or time lapse film I produce, you get direct access to me and my knowledge. I'll help you choose a location, purchase equipment, or edit your photos, whether or not it's astrophotography related. Slight disclaimer: I like to think I know everything, but I don't. I can only promise I'll do my best to share what I do know.

For now I'm limiting this to 10 pledgers, but I may change this depending on my availability.
Goals
$0 of $100 per image set or time lapse film
Here's one of the biggest purchases I could make, and one of the most important for stepping up the quality of my compositions. While I won't guarantee which camera body I'll purchase, I can certainly say I'm looking for a top-of-the-line system that I can mod for my specific purposes. This will include firmware that helps me to take truly stunning time lapses, and a modified IR filter to increase the sensitivity to red light, greatly improving my ability to capture deep sky objects and to truly capture the awesome beauty of the universe around us.

Expected price for this equipment: $4-6000
