About Nadin Mai

Hi,

my name is Nadin and I'm the face behind The Art(s) of Slow Cinema, the only site dedicated entirely to slow films. If you're into Slow Cinema, then chances are that you might have already been on my site without knowing who the person behind it was. Well, it's me! I'm a freelance writer/critic whose interest in Slow Cinema dates back to summer 2009. Béla Tarr's The Man from London got me hooked and since then I have explored the world of Slow Cinema.

The Art(s) of Slow Cinema began as a dumping ground for research ideas during my PhD studies but has since became the largest English-language database on the subject. What can you find on it?

  1. almost 200 texts on films
  2. several articles on books concerning Slow Cinema or related literature
  3. thoughts and questions on specific aspects of Slow Cinema
  4. a list of recommended slow films
  5. a bibliography for those who'd like to read further
  6. overall, over 330 blog posts to date

The Art(s) of Slow Cinema is not an academic site and doesn't want to be one, either. What you read on the site is easily accessible to everyone.

You might wonder what makes The Art(s) of Slow Cinema different from other blogs on film, and you're right about asking this question. Slow Cinema is a field dominated by male critics and male academics. It is extremely difficult to find a woman's voice in this pool of writing on film. What also matters is the perspective on films. Authors often try to write as objectively as possible. I resist this because I find it necessary to stay true to Slow Cinema, which is all about feeling and experiencing.

The Art(s) of Slow Cinema gives you a woman's voice, a personal voice, personal ideas and thoughts, which seeks to shake up existing writing. A little at least. What you read on my website differs greatly from what you find elsewhere.

Update: I finished the manuscript of my first monograph on Slow Cinema. It will be self-published, hopefully in the autumn.

2022 will mark the 10th anniversary of The Art(s) of Slow Cinema. I'm slowly beginning the preparations for this special year, which will see a lecture series on Slow Cinema and specific directors. It'll be a series of possible five or six lectures. If I can somehow manage it, there will also be a day of special film screenings. Fingers crossed!
