About Naomi Rubin

Hello! I’m Naomi and I create a hopeful fantasy comic about queer identities and relationships called Moonsprout Station. I need stories where queer characters just exist from the beginning, exploring deep questions about their emotions and needs. So I'm making them!

The first Moonsprout Story “Only Echoes,” is about Mapel, a mannequin who found themself to be mysteriously alive about a month ago, and their first time going out for a drink with friends. I released the story online one-page-a-week through Fall of 2019, and there's a print version of the full story available on Etsy, at conventions, and some bookstores! I'm currently working on writing several future comics in the series. "Moonsprout" is the name of the floating island where Mapel and their friends live, and future stories will explore their relationships, the mysteries of the floating world, and the influence of a relatively new train system that's begun to connect up the islands.

At the end of 2019, I started on a comic called "Home on Hold" for local organization Pueblo Unido PDX that provides legal-aid and resources for people who are facing detention and deportation cases in the Pacific Northwest. The comic is a way to anonymously shares the stories of two families of Publo Unido clients, uplift their resilience, share important information about the asylum process and how you can help your community. Some of my involvement in the comic is funded by a grant from Multomah County Cultural Coalition, but your support helps me devote more time to this project, and I've been sharing the process of working on it here!

I've also done work for Erika Moen's "Oh Joy Sex Toy," Barry Deutch's "Lefty Cartoons," and the "When I Was Me" comic anthology from Quindrie Press.

It’s important to me that everyone has access to comforting queer narratives - so almost all of the stories are free to read online, and I want to keep it that way. Sharing stories with art is what I want to do with my time, and reader support is the only way for me to keep doing this with any regularity.
With your help, I can spend more time building stories for the Moonsprout world and more, and building art resources and tools to help artists study and create. With enough patrons, I’ll be able to hire sensitivity editors, story editors, and spend more time on printing, translations, and a faster publishing schedule.

The Patreon is a members-only sketch blog and tool shop, where I post sketches, artwork, and drawing resources that I don't post anywhere else. Patrons of 3 dollars and up will get exclusive access to these and other pre-production art every week! For a little more, you can request an idea or a theme for me to draw, as well as access to Discord previews and live-streams, one-of-a kind drawings in the mail, and even a role as an extra in a comic story.

Moonsprout Station is my first long-form story after learning on a few short comics, and I have made illustrations and paintings for events and shows in the US and Hong Kong. Before that, I was a translator and editor of English language manga, like the ALA noted "The Manga Cookbook," "Samurai Confidential," and the "Kanji de Manga" language learning series.

Thank you for visiting, and for making this a thing I can do. Let’s give our stories to the world.
100% complete
I will hire one (or more, depending on content) sensitivity editors per story to help Moonsprout Station (and/or other comics) to have thoughtful depictions of characters from different cultures, genders, and with different abilities.
